Title: Best way to boost the 1.6 16V Geo/Chevy Tracker Motor.
Post by: umiami80 on October 15, 2010, 02:00:45 PM
This topic has been probably been covered to death but I wanted to pick the brain of the most talented and experienced builders and tuners.

I drive a 1998 Chevy Tracker 5Speed 4x4.  When I bought it every orifice leaked oil, the radio didn't work at all and the exhaust was so rotten that it pumped pure exhaust through my shifter into my cabin so I had to drive with my head out the window or I would surely perish.

Now I have a new hard top, factory alloy wheels and some Safari tires, new brakes, new engine seals, new cap, plugs, wires.  New 2.0 exhaust with a high flow cat and 02 sensor. I am getting a P0420 code for over run cat, any tips on how to defeat that? I have a double din GPS and a 600Watt sound system that is just silly.  New heater controls, the works.   I absolutely love this car and it treats me very well.  The car is a dream to drive but now I want to up the power.  From what has been told to me an upgraded exhaust manifold is pointless for power and any cam just shifts the power, not increases it.

Any tried and true bolt-on turbo systems out there?  I am looking for a low boost application with a VERY quick spool.  I think a T-25 from a 2G DSM would be perfect or maybe an OEM turbo from a 2003 WRX.  That point is I need small, fast responding, and able to hold constant boost for proper tuning.

I figure 6PSI would be more then enough to get me a 50WHP gain and wouldn't tax the internals too much.

Any advice or any experience with this?

What about a super charger too much loss on a 1.6 Unit?

Thanks Guys, I posted some pics of my beauty, it's my daily driver.  Hard top for the winter, soft for the summer.

That's a cat efficiency code meaning the cat is inefficient. You can use a OX sensor spacer to trick the reading or replace the cat. You can get spacers from autozone and it's the rear sensor that needs the spacer.

No bolt on kits that I know of. Several of us have done turbos with modest success but built most everything ourselves.

Yeah that's what I thought.  I did that for my Evo and it works.  Do I need multiple spacers or just one?  Plug and play or do I have to drill a certain size hole?
