Title: 88 sami MISSING
Post by: ColtonP on October 20, 2010, 03:16:20 PM
Ok I'm the new owner of a 1988 samurai awesome trail rig. My problem is that it likes to miss at higher rpms around 4500 and on it likes to miss. Today I got it to idle and I can hear a slight miss. I have a few questions. What is the spark plug gap supposed to be? Is there an adjustment for higher rpms? Could it be stale gas?  Please let me know what you think THANK YOU

I also just found out that it is running zero exhaust and a gutted cat would the lack of back pressure cause this

Yea, these engines like a bit of back preassure to them.  I would put a turbo muffler and 2" exhaust on at the most.

If it is an intermittent high RPM miss I would say change your
wires, I had a similar problem and that cured mine

OK, spark plug wires are attached to the end of the spark plug that you can see, the other end of the spark plug is screwed into the engine cylinder head. There should be 4 of 'em, they go to the distributor, and a 5th shorter ( coil wire )  to a little box attached to the firewall ( that's the metal panel at the back of the engine compartment.)
These are fairly simple to change , as long as you do them one at a time, removing one, and replaceing it with a new one before removing the next one. You can buy these spark plug wires at any auto parts store. Just make sure you know what vehicle and year your getting them for when you ask the parts person. Good Luck! :)
