Title: 1600 engine swap
Post by: maltvick on October 22, 2010, 05:39:41 PM
So I just replaced the long block in my Tracker with a imported engine. The fuel injection and distributor were not the same so I used both parts off the engine I removed so everything would  plug back in. The Tracker is a 93. I`m pretty sure the replacement engine was older. I am positive that the timing and firing order are set. I`ve even tried swapping it 180. It still will not start. I truly have checked every possible obvious thing to look for. Is there a difference in these long blocks? Thanks for any ideas. ???

Will it start if you dump gas in the TBI? checked for spark?

Yah I tried that to. It does seem to have spark with a plug removed to look at. The spark does however look weak.

OK, so you didn't remove the timing belt from your import engine?
but the dizzy and injection were different so you used your old engine
parts to make it all work like it was before the swap.

This 93' is it a 16V or an 8V engine?

Now the engine will not start but you think the firing is set correctly
as well as the timing.

If it will not run with gas poured down the carb/TBI  or if it's throttle body
16V I would use starting fluid spray, you have a bad timing/firing order issue.

No matter what you think is right, I promise you if there is spark, fuel and there
should be compression since this is a "good used" engine, it will start or try to
run.

Note 8V engine distributor rotation is clockwise, 16V is Counter Clockwise, check
the firing order 1,3,4,2 If I remember right at least for the 8V, verify if this is
correct for a 16V engine, I don't know why it wouldn't be, but verify the info

Double check your firing order as well.  I ran around on my 16valve swap for a few days trying to track down why it ran so poorly, it ended up that one of my manuals had the firing order with 2 and 4 swapped...
