Has anyone modified a standard soft top for a SJ/Samurai into a 2 piece roof? if so I'd be interested to know how you did it? (I know Bestop make them but my budget doesnt run that far as they are over £300 here in the UK)
I have got an old roof I can cut up as a template & there is a trimming company nearby that I could ask to make up the final item
Cheers :)

well it's not quite your looking for but i'd just put the whole top on except the part where you slide in the front part.
then i would roll back the front part in about three flat folds and secure the velcro parts on each end then to add extra support close the doors on the ends. always held together well for me. i also suggest rolling up your back window when doing this as well.
i would not suggest this while highway driving, but for around town and trail riding it's awesome

A suggestion... turn your old top into a Safari top. You get all the wind w/o the sun beating down on your head.

Here in theUK the Sun is'nt a problem-we dont get that much!!
This design seems really Cr*p whats the point of having a soft top if you cant take it off unless you have 1/2 an hour to spare. I can see why now virtually all the pics of soft tops i've seen have still got them fixed firmly in place!
I feel its time for some modifications !!

What I like most about the Trackkick is the flip top. Sammy's do look better than Trackkick's, but I don't think I'd give up the flip roof!

The safari top keeps most of the rain out and (if you run into a spot of cold weather) the heater is still effective.
Does it take that much time to remove the Sammy top? I can swap tops in under 20 mins on the 'Kick, but never pulled a Sammy top.
If you are going to cut up a Sammy top, you might try putting in roll-up side windows. I did that with one of my cut 'Kick tops. (Sewed velcro on the inside & a strap to hold the window up.)

Thanks for the response - can anyone describe what the "Safari Top" looks like -not familiar with that one

They made them a few years back... mostly for Hawaii, I think. Never really sold for the 'Kick.

Basically, a full top... take out the back window and zipper. Remove the side windows. (The 'Kick version of the top still has the rear corner fabric installed, which looks better than the Jeep and Sammy top.)
If I were gonna convert an old top, I'd just remove the plastic windows & zipper... and maybe sew on some roll-up canvas flaps. <g> Thus, the African Safari look.
