I've found an 87 softtop Kick that I've just about talked myself into stopping and checking out. The window has 4x4 87 - $800 on it. What should I look for with this late model Kick? From the road the body is somewhat rough. This would be a beater IF I go through with it. Any help would be appreciated!

First of all check it out good because the owner does not even know what they have (no Kicks in the US till 89) and I dont think that they were even made before then :-/ Mine is an 89 and I love it. If it runs, drives, and the 4x4 all works good I would consider it. Not to mention you can usually get a little knocked off the price.

Thanks. That I didn't know. How would I verify what year this thing is? VIN?
The body is beat up a little, has some rust, and it is sitting on a flat tire. I'm thinking $500 tops...if it runs.

1988 is the earliest model year you can get...and you'd have to be living in Japan.
If you open the drivers side door, and then look on the inside sill of the body, it should say who made it and when.
FOr example mine was made in March 1991 by CAMI.

It's also usually on the underside of the hood on the left side. Something similar to "this information complies with all _ _ model year trucks" .

No, its definitely older than 97. I'd guess late 80's very early 90's. I hope to get back over to drive it this weekend.

Then perhaps it's a very early 88 and the plate
on the door jamb says like 11/87 Mfgr date but
you would have an 88 model year trucklet, mine
says made 07/88 but it was sold as an 89 yr truck.

...ISN'T 89 WHEN THEY WERE INTRODUCED..........AFTER THE DEMISE OF THE SAMMY
Some people on THIS site are clueless, too...
So by this thinking, the 88.5 Samurai was the "Last Samurai", huh? Coulda SWORN that Sammi's ran through 95... ::)

i think maybe he was talking about the sales drop and the lawsuit deal? they went on until 95 but sales were crap.
