Well my question is When my samurai idles it will sounds like it is gonna cut off but doesnt and it keeps doing it on and off.... What could be my issue? Its a 1990
-
Any ideas.... I will hold the gas down a little bit and it will go up and down reving.... I dont have to much gas in it could this be the problem or something bigger? I did notice it until I put the doug thorley exhaust and got all the exhaust done.
-
Also I changed the spark plugs, wires, Pcv valve, oil, oil filter, and air filter all today... but was doing this before I did all this.
-
A little water in the float bowl can block the jets, back and forth
causing this hunting idle problem

Float bowl?

My '90 Track was doing that, turned out to be a loose and missadjusted TPS.
-
Is it injected or carb?
I'm not sure what year started EFI

It's EFI... I was thinking it was the O2 sensor... Didnt start untill I pulled that one out and put it in the new doug thorley. I've noticed at the end of my tailpipe spits out water or so I think it is water

What do you mean by misadjusted?

Ya, I found a bad O2 out of the box, take it back and have them replace it

Oh I used the stock one that came out of the factory...guess it went bad? It looked pretty black and nasty
-
I appreciate the help by the way... I will let you know how the new O2 sensor works out
-
Remember that the O2 sensor is farther away from the engine and it
takes much longer to heat up, which it needs to be hot to work right,
so drive the truck get it hot and see if the problem continues.
BTW The OE sensor I replaced was still good at well over 200K
miles so don't buy a new one just yet.

Water is normal in a first started up car, the exhaust pipe condenses the water vapor
in the exhaust until it gets so hot that the vapor no longer can condense. For every
gallon of gas you burn, a gallon or more of water in vapor form comes out of the exhaust.
Look at a car on a very cold day, you see it back east all the time in the winter

I had the same problem when I put a header on my kick motor. I dont see EFI sammys in CA very often, but I have dealt with many kick motors. I believe the idle system of the sammy is like the 89-90 kick. you have changed the air flow characteristics so the idle control valve or selanoids out side it normal limits. If it is like the 89-90 kick you can adjust the mechanical stop on the throttle plate. this will allow the vavle to be in the middle of its range. If it is like the later kicks, you dont mess with the throttle plate, but it has an adjustment screw to adjust the duty cycle.
I doubt that the TPS all the sudden went out of adjustement when you changed the exhaust. if O2 sensor is bad, i think that it would just go into limp mode, but weirder things have happened.
let us know if this works.
-
So I Should tighten the screw?
-
Okay just checked the FSM. on the front of the throttle body, there is a screw that is covered with a plug. it is just above and left of the TPS(left looking at it, actually toward the passenger side). I would try it either way, but remember what it was. see if that helps.
-
Yeah I have 2" exhaust with no cat if that helps any? Im getting so damn frustrated with this! I just don't understand why this would just now start doing this after I put a brand new whole exhaust set up?
-
yup, it makes a difference, please keep us posted...
-
Yeah before I mess anything up I have a guy coming to look at it tomorrow so we will see.
-
Well fellas... you will never guess what it was... Its was the TPS it was loose and only had one screw in it the other one was completely missing. It still kinda idles funny. But the surging RPMs have stopped! Nice call Don! Also Is there a way the TPS is supposed to be aligned?
-
Well weird things do happen. Interesting coincidence. Well now go back and adjust timing now since you got that tps fixed.
