Title: Gear grinding noise...87 samurai
Post by: kavu1212 on November 16, 2010, 10:30:37 AM
i have a very loud grinding sound coming from either the tranny or t case on my 87 samurai. It only happens when its in gear and when I an decellarting (not giving it gas...like when you are going down hill)....i have checked the oil level on the tranny and t case both are good. shifters stay in place the whole time.

Some one told me it was the t case going bad and that i could rebuild it and it would be fine. Any way I can check to make sure its the t case before I spend the money to fix it

Thanks
Brian

Is there any vibration at the time?  Does it make the same noise when your coasting in neutral or is it only when you are in gear and off the throttle?

The vibration when you are not on the throttle sounds like bad u-joints.  Not sure about the grinding noise though.
