Title: High Idle after EGR repair
Post by: S.Sidekick on November 19, 2010, 10:36:47 AM
Hey guys I have been starting my kicker almost everyday now while i wait for my front driveline to come back. Ever since last year when i fixed my egr problem my sidekick had an idle around 1500-2000rpm. I took it to a suzuki dealer and they said my base idle was off. When i left the problem was not fixed. Now that my SAS swap is almost done i would like to pass emmissions so i can break in my gears on the road, before wheeling. I wanted to know if anyone knows what this could be. I can put up a video latter if needed, but any ideas.... Could this be my idle position sensor??? And my dad was telling me about some idle sensor that adjust to the load that is being put on the motor (AC, heater, exct), do kickers have this.. if so what is it called??
Thanks,
Jon K.

brd hnter  told me when the egr is disconnected you will be in high idle.  Check with him, but is it possible you have a leak in a line, or maybe one routed to the wrong location?

I dont think this could be, because when i put the EGR and intake back together, I retested the system and all the functions stil worked. any other ideas???

Wax pellet cold start issue, does it settle down and idle right after it's
warmed up? If so it's the curse of the wax pellet, and almost all the
TBI injected trucks do this same thing. Fixing the EGR just let more air
get into the intake, and that just makes the problem worse.

The fix is to remove the 3 screw cover on the front left lower part of
the throttle body and use a bit of rubber fuel line to block the cold start
air passage, which will lower your cold idle, if you live in a cold area you
may want to just leave it alone, go start your truck go in the house and
fix a cup of hot coffee or cocoa and go back out with your hot drink to
go where ever you are headed.

This lets the truck get warmed and is better for the engine anyway

Wild, you again come up with a term I had to look up. ???  Reading your posts is like getting my ASE certification without paying the junior college tuition fees, THANK-YOU!  So, are you saying there is a thermostat somewhere in the air intake, or are you referring to the egr valve itself?

There is a cold start thermostat in the base of the throttle body, it's the
wax pellet that melts with coolant temp and allows the valve to close off
the extra air passage

No, it stays high, then kinda settles, but when i go to shift it shoots high and stays until my I let the clutch out

You might have a frayed throttle cable, they get frayed where
it goes thru the firewall in that plastic thing, it will catch and keep
the throttle from closing all the way to the stop screw.

There is also a throttle kicker, and you may have put a vacuum
line on wrong, check the vacuum hose routing diagram. And look
see to if the bell crank on the throttle is hitting the stop screw

Hey guys I have been starting my kicker almost everyday now while i wait for my front driveline to come back. Ever since last year when i fixed my egr problem my sidekick had an idle around 1500-2000rpm. ...

I would go back and recheck all hoses and fittings.  Sounds like excess air to me, and it came after the EGR fix.  If you can't find anything open or loose, then check your EGR valve.  If it is stuck open fixing the blocked passages allows it to pass more air/exhaust in creating the high idle, and racing motor when fuel is added.

ok, its really wired. I will have to get a video up, because I learned to bypass the high idle by disconnecting a blue clip on the intake. I then adjusted the throttle screw on top of the intake to make up the loss. With the clip disconnected i can get the engine to idle fine, but i would like my engine to be running correctly not half ass. When the engine is idleing at 1000rpm, i can replug the blue clip and it shoots back up to 2000rpm...

OK, I have a few things,

1. what year and engine do you have?
2. I was thinking PCV when I posted about your EGR  ::)  must be an age thing
3. Blue clip? is that a wire connection or a vacuum hose or part of the vacuum
control stuff?

I have a 94, 1.6 16valve. and the blue clip is a wire connector. I clips into the right front part of the intake where vacume hoses go.
