hey all i just wanted so start off by saying thank you for your help on my last post , but i have one more issue i can figure out , i drove it for abooiut 45 min last night and its spuddering like its running out of gas so i filled my tank and its still doing it !it does it randomley, im thinking a fuel filter maybe but i cant find it on my rig ! its a 1983 , at first i thought it was my alt so i checked it out and its putting out 13.9 v with all the lights and heater on , any othe things i can check would be helpful thanks again

The fuel filter is under your rig on the passenger side, strapped to the inside of the frame just above your rear axle. If you can't find it make sure there isn't a straight pipe there, someone did that on my SJ-410 and I didn't realize it until years later when my fuel pump burned out trying to push gas through a horribly plugged up carb.

ok thanks a million ! i will look tomorrow !
-
ok i dont think its my fuel filter , it starts to die when i i turn my headlights on ?????????? i am sooooo confused please help !
-
Ok, you said 13.9V with everything on. Where are you taking the measurement and at what rpm? And, take a deep breath and relax man! ;)
-
i am taking the reading at the battery i dont have a tach but i would gess at 1500-2000 rpm normal driving rpm if not less since i have a 4 speed
-
If it's not a charging issue there might be a short somewhere. Try disconnecting the headlights and see if it still dies when the switch is changed from off to on.
-
ok i will try that tomorrw when i dont need the headlights and i will post when i find , thanks again !
-
so i want out today and unpluged my headlights and it ran great , correct me if im wrong im thinking i need a bigger alt!
-
Probably just need to get the alt rebuilt. The headlights alone shouldn't be enough to cause it to die like that, mine runs fine.
Try taking it down to a shop to get tested.
-
do you have a elect. fuel pump on yours ?
-
Yes, setup through a relay. I can even run the winch without any issues with the engine trying to die.
-
do you know where the neutral safty switch is ?
-
It should be mounted on the side of your transmission. I disconnected mine a while back, same with the clutch safety switch.
-
ok i was driving it today and i had the headlights on as soon as i turned the heater it started to die so im thinking its the battery now im so confused lol
-
Have the alternator tested, on the truck if you can, less work for you
