I've seen a few people befudled by this and I am dealing with it as well. I timed my engine, new fuel filter, checked fuel pressure and injectors, sensors, and have had no luck. I have a 16v and she screams after arround 2500 rpm and runs beastly, but the journey up to 2500rmp is a crawl......so I was on low ranged's website and have a crank pulley kit that is supposed to fix this issue, cause if I remember right my harmonic balancer di have a wobble(tomorrow I will reinspect). Has anyone had luck with this?

Did you time the engine with the jumper on the terminals
to get a true baseline for the timing?

I couldn't find the terminals my hanes book was speekin about. Where are they located? Any pics? How do I time it? I'm used to my samurai with the old school style. Obd2 cunfuses me, lol

I'm not sure on your model, but there is about 8* needed at idle.
You could try advancing the timing (Note: 16V distributor turns Counter Clockwise)
until you get better power down low, but back off of the throttle if you hear pinging,
that would be too much advance

16V standard timing is 5* bftdc. You mentioned your " harmonic balancer" did have a wobble " could be the dreaded keyway hogout. If the bolt holding the crank pully ( harmonic balancer) to the end of the crank had come loose somehow or was removed and improperly reinstalled, your key/keyway could be messed up causing the timing issue. The Test plug is located near the main fuse holder in front of your battery. It should have a rubber cover on it and be attached to the holder with some of the other relays. Once you find it just jump the # 4/5 pins ( someone correct me please if I'm wrong, I'm doing this from memory ) then ccheck your timing. Make sure your engine is warmed up thouroughly before you check timing.

If your ODBCII your diagnostic port should be located behind the passenger side headlight. If you look on your hood there should be a sticker with instructions on which two wires to jump. Once it is jumped it should switch to the 5 degree timing.
I just did a full tuneup and put in some properly gapped spark plugs and still had to increase the timing a bit from stock to get rid of a hole in the throttle about 1.5k. With my old plugs I had to advance it 2-3 degrees or there was a dead spot right in the 2k range where I had no power.

Compared to anything with ANY real displacement, there's always a hole in our powerbands :laugh:

Well I found that thing to link and went to time it..........no notch on my harmonic balancer........oh well, I'm buying and engine next month and ill sell mine for someone to fix up and put in a sami or a kick track, but thanks tho =) ill use it to time this other engine. And curious, why do you need to jump that conector thingy?

Are you sure there is no mark? the mark is usually on the back side
of the pulley and kind of small, you need to clean it and put a dot
of white paint or something so it's easier to read.
You may also have an engine that is 180* out, or perhaps you used
the wrong cylinder for the timing check, because there is no way it
would be running if the engine were off the timing mark so much
that you can't see the mark somewhere around the timing scale
The jumper is to get the base timing, before the computer gives
it some advance at idle, I think you set at 0* and pull the jumper,
the computer does the rest, unless you set base at 5* and pull the
jumper, check your manual

Ya, the V groove pulley on a Samurai has marks on the front and back,
but the Multi-V pulley it's on the back rim of the pulley

Well I'm glad I'm buying a better engine this next month, lol, I timed it and it won't run where its supposed to be, probably doesn't help with my bad egr. But I timed it to where she finally screams to life =)

Did you try putting a zukiworld sticker on it? I hear thats good for AT LEAST 10 extra ponies.

It doesn't get stickers till its on 31"s or bigger ;) my k and n sticker did add about 50hp tho ;)

When my egr modulator was acting up the torque suffers a little and these can't afford any torque loss or issues.
I had an extra off my old engine so I put it on, it ran better. I have my timing at 10* so I run super unleaded. It really helped.

dont forget about a chrome water neck its good for a ez 50 hp, Ive heard fuzzy dice and a pine tree air freshener help with fuel econemy too. :laugh:
