Candice,
Lets start with what he has already done to his rig..... for instance.. he will need a winch bumper for his Kick before he can install a winch... If your not real filmier with what he has done to his rig, post us up a pic, that will help a lot... Has he been talking about any upgrades he has been wanting to do to it?

i think the winch idea would really put a smile on his face.
he'd also spend many hours figuring how to mount it, make or buy stuff to do it, etc.
mabe look into an 8000lb unit (smittybuilt xcr8 works for me- +- $325).

I gotta agree with Rascott... If somebody woulda bought me a winch there would be no problem findin a way to get it hooked up or buyin the stuff ta make it work!!!
I have a 9000 Ramsey and it is overkill but I have had it for a long time on many vehicles. On a kick a 6000 lb anything would be plenty. If you want a lil more outta it just add blocks and and you have 12000 lb line pull and that is way more than adequate. ;)

I have a Warn 6000 pound winch on the Gnewt, and it's never failed me - even winching up an ice-covered obstacle in my neighborhood. The best thing about that, is if you get him the (6000#) winch this year, next year you can buy him a synthetic winch line for it. I switched from factory steel cable to 1/4" synthetic - and I got 175 feet of synthetic line on it. That's freaking amazing!!!

My advice:
If you DO get him a winch, get a damn good one. Warn, Smittybuilt, etc. Getting him a good winch is like giving him good sex. Getting him a bad winch is like giving him Herpes. He'll never forgive you.

ahh, but true love forgives all, except a bad winch!

I'll toss my 2 cents in: Since you don't know his vehicle, & you want him to get a winch he'll be happy with, you could give him a handmade card/gift certificate type thing that says "Good for one winch of your choice... etc."
I know that may seem a bit tacky, but it would also avoid getting the wrong thing & having him be disappointed or him having to pretend he loves it if he doesn't. I'm not sure if any vendors actually offer gift certifacates, but you might check. I've had very good service from Low Range Off-Road in particular, maybe give them a shout & see. (Hope this didn't come too late, since the big day is only 9 days away.) Zomg... 9 days!! I'm never ready!!

A Gift Certificate to his Favorite off road supplier oughta do the trick. Guys love their stickers, Just look around for stickers of products he's bought in the past and you'll probably get some idea of where he's shopped. A couple of suggestions are Trail Tough and Low Range for a good selection of Suzuki stuff. Lucky guy! ;)
