Title: repair rust area at rear wheel?
Post by: PhilipG on December 18, 2010, 06:34:06 AM
Hi folks. I am trying to get my 87 back to where I can use her. Has been sitting for a year and half. There is a fair amount of rust on the drivers side at the junction of the rear wheel opening and body. I see this on lots of Sammi's down here-Texas-and wondered at best way to remove-repair, etc. TAke out the rusted section and repace the metal? clean it up with a wire brush and some ospho? pop rivit some of those metal armor pieces ove the hole? Thanks for your experience. PG

I cut out the fender where it starts to slope down and put in a new chunk of metal.  It also gave me another 2" or so of clearance for the tires.  It allowed me to clear 33" tires without an issue with a standard SPOA.

And an old SJ-410 with SPOA shot from 6+ years ago:
