Title: Difference between 95 and 97 16valve engines
Post by: truckasaurus44 on June 08, 2004, 11:41:04 AM
I'm in the process of replacing my poor 97 tracker's 1.6 16valve and got an awesome price on a 95 16valve.  the only problem is I'm not 100% sure of all the differences between them, particularly the sensors and wiring harness.  I'm probably going to simply put the whole efi setup from my truck on this engine.   What changes will I need to make or account for to swap just the longblock into my engine.  can I leave the distributer from the 95 engine in or will I need to use the 97's?  Any tips on this would help out alot.  Thanks!

I coulda sworn that too, except that the 97 has a sensor or something wired up comming out right in front of the oil pan...and ther isn't anything like that on the 95.  I haven't even pulled the 97 motor yet so there are probably a few other things.  It could be something that is simply located elsewhere on the 95 but I really have no idea.  Is there a suzuki EFI Guru I should try to contact?

Hey 95, how much of a pain in the ass was the v6 swap into the 95?
I'm looking at the same swap in the next couple of months. I'm building a 95 4 door for a guy in Arizona, remember I'm in Idaho, and the 1.6 16v is coming out and a '01 GV 2.5 v6 with auto and kicker3 is going in place. I'm hoping there won't be a nightmare involved in the mechanical aspect of the installation. Any tips?
All help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

How much power does the 2.5 make and whats all involved to put it in the truck

The 2.5 puts out about 155-165 horsepower. Not sure about torque...maybe about 140-150?

Some where they switched to a new computer type that reads off two 02 sensors instead of one :-/ Also check you exhaust for the o2 sensors. My 98 X-90 has one on each side of the converter.

The Sensors and Wiring is quite different. The 95 is OBD1 and the 97 is OBD2 Different sensors, ECM, etc... While the electronics of the two are different, I believe the mechanical is very similar.

Good Luck, Eric

Yup,
WAY different,
I think that the block is the same.
However you'll probably want to keep your old distrubitor, and intake manifold assy.

This way all of your old sensors and electronics stay the same.

I found out that the current 2.5 puts out 165 horse with 162 lb-ft of torque. pretty cool huh?

yeah, I noticed the distributer on my 97 is very different, looks like an hie setup.  No biggy...but the sensor in the front bottom of my 97 still has me really worried.  if its a crank possition sensor and the 96 engine doesn't have one, won't I be screwed?  I just don't want a surprise like that after putting in hours of work

Not sure about the crank position sensor.

What year did suzuki move to the OBD II?

Are 96 models I or II?

How do you tell the difference?

Sidekicks went to OBDII in 96.  Same time as the air bags.
