Title: Ford 9 inch questions
Post by: adamsobi on January 13, 2011, 05:02:37 PM
im thinking of doing the ford 9in rear swap. will i need to find gears to match the front, i have 5.12s or do i certain model fords have this gear ratio? also are there any selectable lockers available, or is ARB still my only option?

There are a lot of options for the Ford 9".  You can go with Electric lockers or the ARB, but not OX for some reason, even though they have one for the 8.8.

Are you going to have your 9" cut down, go with a custom rear axle such as a Spider 9, or swap full width axles under both ends?

Most likely.  Most 9" rear axles are taken from full sized vehicles, so they need to be cut down to fit.   F-150 9" axle is 65", compared to the 54" (I think) width of a Tracker.  So as long as your ok with your rear tires sticking 5" further out on both sides of your rig then you won't need to cut it down.

While it can be done on the cheap, if you plan on switching to 3/4 Ton running gear under your rig and to keep it in full street capable condition you really should plan for about $1000 per axle.

The old ford bronco's in the mid 70's would be the narrowest dana 44 front and 9" rear. But still much wider than a sammy

FWIW; no ox locker is available due to the lack of diff cover, the ox locker's shift rail is integrated in to the diff covers

Ah, that makes a lot of sense.  Thanks!

I found mine off of a Jeep CJ buggy that was upgrading axles. It was actually a little narrower than the Kick axle.

Another thing to consider is that because the 9" is so well supported in the aftermarket, it may be better to get a completely new assembly vs. junk yardin'.

you can get a 5.13 r&p set that would work    best of all if you had a front axle made too you can gear way down as low as 7.33
i want to build a set of axles for my sami  the wife keeps telling me its her or the sammy  and the sammy is staying  >:D had it longer
