Hello all. New Samurai owner here. I am wandering what all (anything special or odd sized) you keep in the tool box that stays in your rig. My primary use for this vehicle is hunting/exploring, so I will be in the boonies. Also what spare parts do your carry?

I have two softsided tool bags that sit behind the rear seat. in one is what I call Suzuki in a bag. I parted out a sammy a couple years ago and I saved all the nuts and bolts from the car. It has saved my day more than once

8, 10, 12, 14, 17,19mm wrenches (2 of each) ratchets and sockets, assorted vice grips, mechanics wire, wire strippers, and several screwdrivers. oh and a good ol big hammer...
i keep a full backpack and ratchet set in the truck.
spare parts are wires, cap, rotor, plugs (used parts)
rebuilt locking hubs, spare oil, water, gas.
try to keep as meny tools and parts as i can in the truck...
plus axe, shovel, come along, and ratchet straps.

Gloves (I like to have one pair that is leather and one pair of the mechianx brand gloves), 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm wrenches ratchets and sockets (a few standard sizes too for other peoples rigs), vice grips, lineman's pliers, 1 straight and 1 Phillips screwdriver. a big hammer, slip joint pliers, channel locks, electrical tape and wire, electrical fittings and a crimper, at least one or two U-joints, water, gas or at least a spare gas can, Hi-lift jack, star lug nut wrench, spare tire (same size as other four tires so I can still wheel out of trouble), flashlights, head lamp, TOW STRAP with loop ends only not hooked ends, at least 2-4 clevis' for use with that strap, fuses, CB radio, FM radio, shovel, 2000+ lb come along (when I have a good working one), if I think I might be wheeling for more than just an hour or if it's hot out, than also food and water for me and any passenger I may have, cell phone, rubber bungees and ratchet straps can sometimes come in handy too. DO NOT forget a TOW STRAP!!!!!!!!!! (my first time ever wheeling my Sami I did not have one and now I never drive down the street without one, enough said LOL)

A tubeless tire repair kit and some kind of onboard air is a must for me. Also in my tools bag is some wire and connectors to repair electrical problems. Just a word about shovels and jacks. First don't waste your time with anything but a full size d handle shovel. I have a hi-lift jack that I have owned for over thirty years. I love it and it has hands down gotten me out of more stuck situations than my winch, tow strap or any other recovery method period. That said, it is no good without somewhere to lift it. The Sammy bumpers are tinfoil and cannot be used. I designed my front bumper with a flat bottom so I could lift with it. For the rear, I made plates with angle iron welded on the ends. The plates are bolted on where the tow bar/dirt digger bolts on under the rear bumper.

my sidekick just has some nice custom made crumpled plasic bumpers from my highlift, crumpled the plastic till it got to the metal bumper underneath. (ive got a winch bumper waiting to go on)
i make sure to carry atleast 2 or 3 tow straps, ive had it happen where i got stuck with NOTHING close by, with my tow strap and come along i was 10 feet from the closest thing i could pull from... thats the worst.

When in the woods I always keep a toolbox loaded with the stuff already mentioned. I also keep a spare fanbelt, duct tape, jumper cables, small A/C compressor, spare fuel filter, oil, and anything else I can think of.
And have had to use just about all of it at one time or another.

I have one bag with tools, it has two of every wrench size I use on the SJ. That way I can take the entire rig apart by hand if needed. I also have a socket set with one of each size.
Second I carry a standard parts bag. It has some spare electrical wiring, automotive fuses, wire strippers, valve stems and a valve stem puller along with a full set of valve caps. And two spare battery terminals, they are cheap and I have given away at least 4 on the trail or used them to fix rigs with loose battery terminals. And a set of screwdrivers, pliers, vicegrips, etc.
Last is the oil bag. I have a gallon of gear oil and 5 quarts of 10w40 along with a funnel. Brake fluid, power steering fluid, bearing grease and some nomex gloves to keep the hands clean. Also tossed in is a star wrench for removing the tires and a set of jumper cables. I will usually bring along an air compressor as well.

May be a silly question but I want to keep things as simple as possible. Do I need any if the in between sizes of 8, 10, 12, 14, 17,19mm sockets and wrenches?

I think i will go to sears and put together a tool kit to leave in my rig (tin-top). That way it will never be forgotten

One tool I always carry in a rig toolkit is a magnetic pickup tool.

When a nut/circlip/etc fall into the mud or snow, it is indispensable.
Also saved one guys bacon when he dropped the wingnut to his aircleaner down the 4barrel on his chevy :)

I tend to keep a laminated copy of the mech/elec parts of the FSM stashed in my rides, along with spare fuel pumps allready mounted AND sealed, so that when they dump, and they will, all that I have to do is simply change everything over to the fresh pump and go. The mech. equipped ones I tend to install an elec. pump close to the tank, usually close to the fuel filter and the extra fuel hose to bypass the old pump. This is in addition to the majority of things all ready listed.
