Title: sloppy steering
Post by: fasterthanyou on January 26, 2011, 09:33:44 PM
Hey guys, just bought an 86 and its all stock but the 29" bgg all terrians. My question is what is causing the sloppy steering in it? there is about 4" of play in either direction in the steering wheel...doesnt feel very safe. Could it be the steering box,tie rod ends, etc....?
Thanks

get a friend to saw the wheel back and forth while you look at the steering, you should see where its sloppy. also try lifting the front axle off the ground and grabbing the front wheels and shifting them, there should be NO slop between the front tires.

it could be worn joints, worn box, etc. I have a trackick that had bad wheel bearings, and you could not drive it straight at all.

I would check your rod ends, as jawman said.  It's pretty dangerous to be driving with that much slop.
