Title: 95 sidekick 4 door trans oil leak
Post by: thrash1 n CRASH on February 01, 2011, 08:48:36 PM
So here is a good one for ya, been driving this thing for over a year now and now the 5 speed trans starts leakingfrom somewhere from the top... degreased everything, steamed it real good, but still can't find the leak... What's next drop the trans and look for plugged vent hose or ?  It happened all of a sudden ond day fine ,next gear oil all over everything.. replaced output seal on transfer case but found out it was leaking higher, right above the t case front output shaft, with gas at 3.60 a gallon , I need to get this thing back on the road, Any ideas would be helpful, really don't want to pull the trans but if I have to so be it,
 Thanks in advance ???

Hard for us to tell you where the leak is.  You are just going to have to keep looking, until you can figure out where it is coming from.
One trick I have heard of that is used to find a leak....clean the area really good, sprinkle something like baby powder or flour all over the area of the suspected leak....drive it for a few miles, then look to see if you can see where the oil has ran down through the powder/flour.

Sounds  like an idea, will try that in the am. Thanks for the input. Really hate to have to pull the thing out but we shall see, thanks again,
Kevin

Yeah, really no use to pull the tranny until you know where it is leaking.  Because I doubt you would be able to see where it is leaking, once you pull it.

Well found the leak, it is in  between the trans and t case, can I just pull the t case off and reseal them ? Also is it common for this to happen all of a sudden?

There should be seals on the tcase input shaft and the tranny output shaft.  IIRC, there is also a seal (more like a plug) at the end of where the countershaft of the tranny fits into the end of the tranny housing, so it may be what is leaking).  So I would guess one of those seals (or plug) is leaking.  I've never sealed the actual cases, since there isn't supposed to be oil inbetween them.
