Title: Swapping a 2.0 for a 2.3 Aerio Engine?
Post by: ShapeShifter on February 06, 2011, 08:04:56 AM
Has anyone ever tried this?

I read that the 2.3 was an evolution of the 2.0....

I always wondered that as well.  Is the 2.3 transverse in the Aerio?

Good point.  I suppose that means it's impossible?

No it means you have to make it fit.  Rumor is that you change out the oil pump, pickup tube & pan, intake and exhaust manifolds and create a set of mounts.  Make up a few missing steps, try using your ecm, or integrate the aerio into your rig.
Plan on a little extra time chasing gremlins.  STAY AWAY from the CAN BUS, it needs computers in communication.

I apologize for my ignorance, but wouldn't it be a lot easier to swap in the 2.5 six? or if that's not enough the 2.7?

Easier - no - better - maybe.

The 2.3 is, so to speak, the next iteration of the 2.0 J20, you can probably just drop it in and bolt it up, and do a little bit of futzing around with the intake & exhaust and you're done - they're very similar in terms of engine management electronics

The V6 on the other hand is a different transmission, different manifolds, different ECU and harness - it's definitely more work, you probably will get more power and torque out of it than you would the 2.3, so it might be worth the extra work though.

The 2.7 is MUCH tighter, a little heavier, more wiring...  With more power.  The 2.7 only comes with Automatics (not that that can't be changed).  2005 and later use a CAN Bus, and computers (ECM, TRANS, BODY, +) must be linked and working for Trans to function properly, earlier years are easier.  Also require a body lift, or hood modification.  And they love to cruise!!

Not the 1st gen XL-7s.  5-speeds were rare, but there.

Can you tell me more about it?  Do you have any pictures?  Did you do the work yourself?

I was under the assumption that an Aerio 2.3 (transverse) is a "direct" swap in LONG BLOCK form.  Meaning you just need to swap over all of your accessories, intake & exhaust.  ECM & Fuel are both supposed to support the 300 extra cc's.
