I'm almost embarrassed to admit this, but in a desperate attempt to change to look of my boring little Tracker, I bought a set of black euro taillights off ebay. :-[ (It's a silver 4-door 03 2.0.) Anyway, I get the taillights and try to install them but no good. They are the same size and dimensions as the stock tails, but the bulb socket holes are different. The ebay ad did say 99-03 Grand Vitara/XL7, and it didn't mention Chevy Tracker, but I thought for sure they would be the same. So is there really a difference in taillight bulb sockets between Chevy Trackers and Grand Vitaras? Looking at the back of the taillights...The Tracker has 1 big hole at the bottom (with 3 notches), and 2 medium sized holes above it with 4 notches each. The ebay lights have all 3 medium sized holes with 4 notches each. (but not the same medium -sized holes as the Tracker's medium-sized hole) In other words, they're completely different.
If someone with a GV or XL7 could confirm this, then maybe I could just get GV/XL7 bulb socket harnesses from a salvage yard for my Tracker? Otherwise, I'll have to try to send them back or put them in the classifieds here. But I'd rather keep them if I can make them work. Thanks.

Did a little online searching and found some better visual aids. The pic of the harness is exactly what my Tracker has. The big gray socket is the one that goes on the bottom of the taillight. The other pic is the backside of the euro tails I bought. You can see they're all the same size. So I guess the question now is will the GV/XL7 harness plug into my Tracker harness?

Found someone at work that has a 99-03 XL7, so I asked her if I could remove her taillight to have a closer look at it. :) Yeah, I got a wierd look but she said ok. So here's what I found... As I expected, the GV/XL7 does indeed have different taillights than the Chevy Tracker. The difference being the bulb socket sizes. However, the harnesses have the same plug and I prooved it by plugging my Tracker light harness into her XL7. So it looks like all I need now are bulb socket harnesses from a salvage yard to be able to use these taillights on my Tracker.

Have a picture of these black tailights?

The idea to buy these came when I started seeing GMC Yukons were coming from the factory with very similiar taillights. I thought they looked pretty cool. And since they were factory, they couldn't be considered rice right? :)

Yup. Had I noticed this post earlier, I could've saved you some hassle.
Canadian-made trucks' wiring is different than Japanese-made trucks' wiring. Been there, done the hell out of that.

Yeah well, nothing like re-inventing the wheel. :)
So you're saying I'm on track here with my plan? Swap out the harnesses and I'm good?

Yup.
Actually, I may have gone the cut 'n splice route, but either way. Just make sure you don't get more of what you already have! All XL-7s were Japanese; I'm not positive about GVs.
