Title: Help!! What Happened??
Post by: Riverrat on February 18, 2011, 09:04:32 AM
About a mo. ago drove 3.5 mi. to store. While passing outboard of gas pumps over a little uneven ground engine quit!
Had spark & fuel? But would not start. A friend was there & towed it home. Tried to start it while being towed several times-no go!! Started fine next AM, changed fuel filter & added Sea Foam, it ran fine for not over 10 mi.round trips!!

About two weeks ago same 3.5 mi. trip to store after a cold start, & while passing outboard of gas pump, Engine quit in the same exact same place!! The uneven ground is dried mud from tire tracks, 1-2 in. high! Another friend towed me back  home, & it would'nt start while towing!!! After about 4 hrs. sitting it started & ran fine?????????????????
I have owned this 88 Sami for 11 yrs. & this is the first times it failed me. The compression is not where it should be, I know by the way it turns over!! That's why I want a fresh engine, but I would like to figure this out first!
Thinking about the engine from samuraisalvage with the Weber & Header! Any PM advice will be greatly appreciated & will be held in strict confidence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all the knowledge on this website this problem should be a snap to solve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What should I change first, the COIL??????????????????????????????????????????????????

THANKS!!!

I would change the coil wire first.  If you have spark, the coil is working (so is the coil wire), but coil wires give more trouble than coil's.  When coils go they are usually gone.

BrdHntr!
Thanks! Been driving around the bluff last couple days, without a problem. Starts right up, hot or cold & runs great! If I can get it to quit, I have a coil wire made up & ready to go! Did'nt get a 1/4 mi. from home.

I know this off topic, but I am the proud owner of an 3yr. old English Pointer! Too thick here to BrdHnt (no farms) she is a house pet that likes to tree marsh coons.
THANKS!

Georgia?  Isn't that place loaded with quail?  Not that they are easy to get, but that English Pointer should be locked up on point most of the day.  (When it isn't trail riding.)

BrdHntr!

Still can't get the problem to happen again! Sami starts & runs fine hot or cold! Afraid to get too far from home, might not find a friend. Although not many strangers around this rural area.

I sure thought my problem might have happened to one of you experts on this forum!

Georgia! Right! Plenty of Quail inland from here. The high land here is planted in pines by Paper co's. & total underbrush!
The rest is swamps ankle to waist deep, with Gators & Snakes!! The last covey I can remember seeing was about 10 yrs.
ago, & looked like mostly roosters~!!

THANKS

I had this same problem this summer.
My 87 Sammy is still had the stock carb!
Hit a bump (Speed bump in parking lots) at it would quit, wait 10-15 min to get it to restart, drove me nuts!!!
Solution/Cure----- it is the Fuel metering & shut off valve in the stock Hatachi carb is going bad!!
This is a Non Service-able Item!! My Cure was to replace the whole carb with a Weber Carb for Sammy's from Redline carbs.
It wasn't a 100 HP in a box, but you will be pleased with the big improvement.
The swap took a Sunday afternoon & 4 beers. NOTE: I match ground my intake/adapter plate/ carb bores for a smoother air flow!  AND it is best to lock tight the mounting studs as I had some Vac leaks from the mounting studs coming loose on my 1st outting!!

Thanks!

Capt. when this happened to you, was it flooded?? I think mine flooded bad & killed the plugs.

Yes, but only sometimes it would act that way. Other times it would restart, but you would have to High Rev it to get it to move as it had no low speed power, and then in 300ft it would crap-out again.
I did the same thing, thinking it was a bad coil, ignition problem, timing belt, but is was leaning out and would cause it to back fire.
The Fuel Metering Valve has the wires coming out of the top center of your stock carb, the valve itself goes thru the center of the float bowl and has an "O" ring sealing it to a port in the bottom of the float bowl which feeds your main jets.
Not Working Right, shuts off fuel to main jets!!

After I swapped Carbs (and got rid of the Pollution Crap under the hood), it has been running great.

Now my newest project: this weekend is to rebuild my transfer case with a 4.9/1 gear kit as my 31x 10.50x15's are killing my torque range on a 1.3 8V.

ignition coil could be going bad- cutting out after it gets hot enough.
it'll start after the coil cools down, but eventually won't even do that.

I see your are still having problems!!
Try the carb thing, or waiting for a cheaper solution?

I also see your side bar that you were (There are no more "Diesel Boats" in the U.S.Fleet) a Sub Mariner.
My Dad was a Sub Mariner in the Korean War. The 1st of the "Guppy Class" boats!!

Rascott!
Got a new coil laying on the seat!

Capt.!
Got a Redline Weber on the way with M-Choke!
Yeah! No more diesel boats in the US Fleet! But the slogan DBF lives on.
I served in a fast attack in the 50's, USS TANG SS 563.
