Title: Sidekick won't idle
Post by: LBC4x4 on February 20, 2011, 07:12:14 AM
I have a 92 Suzuki sidekick with a 1.6 l 16 valve motor. I can't get the motor to idle. It will fire and run as long as I hold the ignition but as soon as I let off  the ignition it drops rpm and stalls. I checked the fuel pump and it has good pressure and don't know what to check next. I opened the distributor cap and there was some slight corrosion on the contacts. Could this be the problem?  Any help would be great thanks.

Hold the ignition? like in the start position or close to it?

You might just have a bad ignition switch

When I turn the ignition to Start the car it will start and if I hold it in the turned position the engin will run. Then when I let it rotate back to the "running" position it stalls. Where is the ignition switch and is there a way to test it?

The switch is right behind the key cylinder, you might want to take it to
someone to work on it, unless you think you can get it, but it sounds like
the contact in the switch is bad, I think a heavy set of keys contributes to
this problem, I had to replace mine a number of years ago too

Check your tail-dome fuse.  It provides memory power to the ecm, and controls the ground to hold the Main power relay in (I think).  I had this problem when I first tried starting my new engine.  It would start and run in the start position only.  I found a bad fuse, replaced it and ran fine.  If not your Tail-Dome fuse check the others.

Alright guys, I checked all the fuses and now I cant get it to start fire. I am getting spark on all the cylinders but can't get it to fire. When I try to start it j can smell fuel but still no ignition. I have even tried starter fluid in the intake.  What can I try next

If you have spark and fuel it will start, when does it have spark? when do you
smell gas? Still sounds like a bad ignition switch, I had an old VW that did this,
would not start while cranking, only when you let off the start position then
the engine would start, it was a defective switch.

You need a helper to check the spark while cranking
