Title: Pully on end of Camshaft different degrees
Post by: chevymagoo on February 24, 2011, 08:23:49 PM
Hi so i was wondering   I know on the 1.0s you can rotate the pully on the end of the cam and advance or retard the opening of the valves which creates more or less power at different rpm bands   I was wondering if the 1.6 16 valve could have the same option.  However i do not know if this is a non interfereance engine so i am curious to see if anyone with a 16v has tried this and if the results were sucessful.  If i knew i wouldnt hurt my engine by playing with this, i would try it for myself because right now i am only getting 18 mpgs (with a three inch body lift and 30 x 9.5s auto transmission) and wanted to improve on that a little since gas in my area is supposed to be going up to $3.50 a gallon  Thanks   also, other tips on improving my gas mileage are also acceptable  I really like the looks of my 30's but will sacrifice them if i have to.

Play with the valve timing, you cannot hurt the valves on a 1.6L 16V engine

Has anyone ever tried this before with sucess?  I guess that is my question.

In general advancing the cam will move the power band lower into the RPM
range, the problem you are going to run into is the limitation that the belt is
going to give you as far the number of degrees you can change the timing

So will advancing the timing help me with my mpgs,  I dont do a lot of highway driving but when i do i run almost 4000 rpm and now, It seems a little doggy getting it up to speed which is probably costing me fuel mileage right?

The tires are most likely the cause of your reduced mileage, a set of
235s is the ideal size for a 3 speed auto, I don't know how they would
affect a 16V auto if it were a 4 speed.

I do know that a turbo setup on the 16V makes them run down the road
at better speeds and improved mileage and emissions, Bentparts reported
close to 25 MPG and a big grin doing it

What did you source the turbos off of, and do you have a link to ur turbo build thread if you have one.  I would like to know how you set up the intercooler etc.  Thanks

Ya, this site info is quite old, several years at best, but really there
have been no developments since the writeup, I did however put
in forged pistons from SRP that are designed for a Honda D series

Isn't the 1.6 16v engine an interference engine?

My tracker is a 95  there isnt a cam position sensor on it is there?  cuz that would prolly end up messing with the computer and timing then right?

I think the later 96' and up had a crank position sensor, I don't
think they ever installed a cam sensor

The "cam position sensor" - if you want to call it that - is in the distributor.  I don't think Suzuki ever called it that, but that is  the sensor that the ECU gets the timing information from.

I would advance the cam! It will help in town driving as well as highway. Somebody
Makes an adjustable cam sprocket, I just don't remember but it was 170.00. A machine
Shop can cut a new keyway 4 degrees advance for a lot less than that! Good luck and keep
Us posted please. Wild, I agree, turbo would really be the way to go so I'm doing it!

You might find some trick cam sprocket on the GTI Suzuki forums
but I have never looked for one

A word of warning, after you have had a turbo on your truck, you
won't want to drive without it, but you will have one big grin as
you go down the road

Long ago in a Galaxy far, far away...

There was a company that made adjustable timing belt cam pulleys for the 1.3 engine.

You might find a mention of it either in really old (2002-2003) posts at the Geo Forum at Offroad.com (if they still go back that far...) or in the tech stuff at Izook.com (a fine leisure service of ZukiWorld.com!)

I hope that this helps!
