Title: Need 4.62 3rd members
Post by: BSulla on February 28, 2011, 04:47:22 PM
I have a 98 3spd auto tracker with 30" tires  and would like to swap to 4.62 gears.

Do you need complete thirds or will just the ring and pinion do?

I don't understand why you want 4.62s???

You need to go the other way with bigger tires, unless you are going
to do a back to stock conversion, and BTW you should have a 4 speed
auto trans unless I'm mistaken

I need complete thirds,I don't know how to set up a ring and pinion.      I have 4.30's now and thought 4.62's woul get me back to stock drivability?

If your going to stay with that size tire I think a 4.62 is a good choice, IMO. Eventually you could probably go a tad bigger, say 31's.

If he has a 2 door, it will have the 3 speed auto and 4.30 gears.  So 4.62s would actually be better for bigger tires.

BSulla....a bolt in front 4.62 third is going to be hard to find, for yours.  Because you have the 26 spline sidegears in the front and the only third that will have a 4.62 third with 26 spline sidegears is going to be a 96-98 suzuki X90.  I do have a rear 4.62 third that will work for you, but I don't have any front 4.62 thirds that will have 26 spline sidegears.
I thought of a way to get you what you need....I'll send you a PM with some details.

those 4.30's are kinda hard to find and sought after by guys doing the diesel swaps so you should be able to fetch good money for them.

Then I would say go to a 5.12, I thought he had 5.12 to start with, not
4.30s, the jump from 4.3 to 4.62 is not much and you will be disappointed

I agree,'also 5.12's are readily available
4.3 to 4.6 would be a waste of time IMO

At first I was looking for 5.12's but read some posts that I would be turning too many rpm's on the highway. My 30" tires are brand new so I will have them awhile but my next set will be 31's. So I guess I'm still confused on what ratio I need. What I do know is I need to buy some very soon as this thing is a turd on the freeway.

FWIW My Grand Vitara 5spd came stock with 4.30's, I lifted it and put on 30" tires, I regeared it to 5.13's. The speedo is off on the highway but it takes off like it should have from stock, and off-road it is awesome considering that there are no 4:1 t-case gears available for it. Go with the 5.12's. If you are really set on the 4.62's I'll trade mine for your stock 4.30's four our hard top samurai.
