Title: Overheated...now clutch is gone
Post by: ender06 on March 26, 2011, 11:14:16 PM
95 geo  16 valve 5spd
Ok guys. I was four wheeling in some steep hills in 4lo. Had a water hose bust. The temp gauge was between half and the red line. Not to bad. But now my clutch is BARELY disengaging. Wont even run in gear with the clutch pressed in. It is working a little tho becase IF I get it going down the road and mash the clutch and give it gas it slips. Did I burn the clutch up? Or could it be an unrelated problem. Clutch cable?

Definitely unrelated, any not likely to be the cable - time to drop the tranny.

Drone637 had his clutch shaft linkage slip (95 Tracker).  We had to turn it back in place and then weld it.  Just recently someone else on here reported having the same problem.

Ok thanks guys. Where would I look first...before I start dropping the tranny. I've not had the chance to really inspect anything seeing as how this happened at midnight last night.

Alright. I checked the clutch lever on the tranny.  It feels good and tight. Clutch pedal is super loose up top tho. Seems also the cable is NOT bracketed anywhere in front of the motor. It should be mounted TIGHT somewhere up there right?  Might be the only pro lem not sure yet.

The cable at the clutch lever has NO play...But the pedal has a good 2 inches of play... Where to look?? Stretched cable??

I'd suspect something in the pedal assembly - if I'm not mistaken.

I just check the manual - on a LHD vehicle the clutch cable does not connect directly to the pedal as it does on a RHD vehicle - your pedal turns a shaft, and the other end of the shaft has a lever on it that moves the cable.  This lever is on the right side of the brake pedal - and from the looks of it, the shaft has a squared portion that the lever sits on and is held with a nut.  I suspect that lever may be loose, or the squared hole in it may have started to round off.

At some point I think I've heard of this being welded - but as I mentioned, this is only on LHD vehicles, so I've never actually seen it.

What BRD HNTR said, check where the clutch is welded onto the shaft under the dash.  It depends on the year how it is setup, some have the clutch pedal slide off, others it is welded onto the shaft and the other end slides off.  Mine now does both as I scavenged parts from another rig to make mine work.
