anyone have ideas, plans, or just some write up that they would share on how to make a roof rack for an 87 suzuki samurai?
-
FYI
I "Drop Da Top" a lot, so I haven't seen any real user friendly roof racks,
also, some Off Roader's here that have them find that they "Load-up" with
Trail brush from all the tree branches hanging into Logging Roads we run.
PetroWorks had one that you may look at on-line to get Ideas from.

Are you looking for a permanent rack or just one for wheeling? A club member has one from a Jeep Cherokee, he just fabbed up some mounts to bolt it to the roll cage and uses it for wheeling trips only.

I would like a permanent one but cant mount to the iterior roll cage because its my daily driver and I need a softtop option. that is a good picture and does give me a good idea if it comes down to a temp one. I just need to get a front cage and windshield put on now.

That's actually my sammy on the Dusy/Ershim trail in Cali.We were on the trail for 5 days, luckily my friend had an open seat for my kid to ride in other wise it would have been really crowded.

Yep. I didn't bother posting the picture of the other roof rack, as it didn't make it. :D
Calmini has a roof rack available as well:

I welded it in 3 different places and ended up just strapping the thing down to the torga bar. :o

Here's my 87 samurai... I custom made it with the 12tone pipe bender.. I used it alot on my fishing pole and surf boards
-
I like that. the studs just go through the cage? I like the idea of doing that when I dont have the top on.
-
here's another picture with the soft to on...with the 235/75/r15 tire... I have my bigger tires on when I going fishing on the lava trials

I ran my mounts down to the body. 6 mounts total. Fronts unclip and come out to allow windshield to fold down. Originally it was made to un-pin and come off. I ended up liking the rack enough to leave it on all the time so I welded the un-pinning joints solid for strength & rigidity.
Here are a few pics. I don't have any upclose pics of the mounts. this is the best I could come up with:

Calmini is the way to go. I don't think you could buy all the stuff and build it for much less than the 400 and some asking price. and it is a nice setup.
