Title: 87 Sami 4 wheel drive noise???
Post by: ethienes on April 20, 2011, 07:06:54 PM
So I have a 87 Sami goes into 4 wheel drive and drives fine but when I let take my foot off of the accelerator it makes a grinding/clanging sound. Pretty loud. Anyone have any Idea what this is or how to fix it. I've driven in the snow this winter no problem going only when I slow down and no problem in 2 wheel drive. Thanks

If it only does it when coasting you might have u-joints going out.  Climb under the rig and see if you have any play.

I checked my u joints and they seemed fine. The front drive line had a little play in it but i wasn't sure if that is normal it wasn't in 4 wheel drive when I check though now that I think about it.

Any other thoughts on anything else I should check or any thoughts on the noise.
Thanks

i vote for U-joint. Drive it in 4X4 for a while and get under and feel them. If they are going bad, they will be warm or hot. They don't always get loose.
