Title: Pinion Gear Ratio
Post by: segermech on April 22, 2011, 05:59:52 AM
Is there a diff pinion gear set available in a 4.3 ratio.  seems like 4.57 and 5.38 are the norm.  But I'm not going crazy with the tires (29-30") and would like to keep close to the stock ratios.  Anyone know where I can find a set??

Thanks a lot.

more info needed here...

the "diff pinion" is not a set, its one part of a ring and pinion set. what are you trying to do? it takes one pinion and one ring gear (matched) to create a ratio.and both have to be changed to raise (numerically lower) or lower (numerically higher) your final drive "differential" ratio.

what; year,model (2/4 door), what transmission?

do you know your current ratio?

what size are your current tires?

What I'm, trying to do is go to ~30" tire from 26" tires and keep my gearing in line with stock.  Right now by diffs are 3.727.  With ~30" 4.3 would be really close.  I have a 94 stock samurai 5 spd.

What you need is to find a used set if you can out of a 2 door automatic Sidekick or Tracker. Most of them wre 4.30 ratio.

No.  Most 2 door auto trackicks have 4.62 gears.
4.30s are found in 2 door trackicks with the auto and the 16V engine.

That is a list I made and posted.  There have been a couple of revisions since that list was posted.  It is still all correct, I just had a couple of setups in that list that were never offered.
You can take the following off the list...
92-98 4dr 1.6L MPFI 3speed auto. 4.30
94-98 2dr 1.6L MPFI 4speed auto. 5.125

And a FYI, for those of you that don't know...
TBI=8V
MPFI=16V

I know it says auto.  What I was saying "no" about, was your statement of "most of them wre 4.30 ratio".  Most auto 2 door trackicks are NOT 4.30 ratio....most are 4.62.

What we have here is failure to communicate. :laugh:

Segermech,
Pros to changing Tcase gears.
1. Versatility - I mean you will get a wider range of ratios to work with
2. High side of the gear sets are lower than stock thus you will still be able to run down the road w/out issues on 30" tires.  Gear sets to consider.  4.16, 4.91 or 5.14.  Each of the gearsets
3. Low side of the gear set is great on trails.
Use this to compare

I realize it is set for a 1986-1990 Samurais but I don't think there is much that changed from the transmission back.

Get a 4:1 t-case or gear set.  Much better mod for a mild lift.  I have run such a setup with 30" tires for 10+ years.  No problems whatsoever.

I guess this is just my assumtion that most people wouldn't choose an 8vlv over a16vlv, and in that I have only messed with 3 speed GM autos by choice. All of the Trackicks with that combo have 4.30s. And I guess I should state that is based on the erea I live in (East coast)

I agree, in that most people would take a 16V over an 8V.  But up until 94 a 16V was not an option with a 3 speed auto in a 2 door trackick.  So you have 89-93 (and most 94, and all 2wd 95s) that you could only get the 8V with the 3 speed auto.  And there were a lot of 2 door trackicks sold in this time period and they were all 4.62 geared if they had the 8V and 3 speed auto....hence my contradiction of your initial statement. 8)
