I have a 1993 Suzuki Sidekick 1.6 16v. So over the weekend in Moan showing up Overpriced jeeps My sidekick started acting funny around 2.5 to3 k rpm. I changed the fuel fliter thinking it was a not getting gas but it didn't change it. I finaly figured that it jumped timing. I had to run advanced to get it off the trail. I retimed it and it skiped two teeth. The timing belt tensor is the cheapest looking thing i have ever seen. Has anyone else had this issue taking these things of road were it is bumpy or is there a fix for this???

Change your timing belt at the recommended service intervals
and you won't have any problems, unless there is another problem

Timing belt was changed 5k ago. the belt tensor does not seem like it hold the tension all that well with that small spring and thin aluminum plate

The spring is not for tension, just a guide for setting the tensioner,
I have logged over 270,000 miles in my 89' Sidekick and never had
a belt skip a tooth, so I would guess the tensioner was set too loose

Do you ever put locktight on the bolt holding the tensioner tight??

No, I just make sure it has the right torque so it stays tight

In my experience, I have always replaced the tensioner, when I've replaced the timing belt. The Gnewt has not had any problems.
