Title: Confirming 4wd is working
Post by: keith on July 06, 2005, 12:18:49 AM
I am probably going to Zukimelt this weekend and wan't to confirm that all is well with the 4wd system.  This morning I stopped on gravel in 4wd and gassed it hoping the front tires would spin to show they were under power.  I could get all sorts of spin out of the rears, but none out of the front left, the one I could see from the driver seat.  What is another way I can confirm that all is well?  Preferably from the driver's seat.

I get on a loose gravel hill(carpool parking lot) with the hubs locked, gas it in 2wd and it will spin in the rear, then I put it in 4wd and do it again, mine won't spin, it will climb.(if all is well)

You might need to clean and regrease your hubs

Drive it down into one end of the trench on blue trail...  ...If you can drive it out the other end, it's working :) ;D :)...

Seriously, I get hardly any spin out of the front wheels unless we're doing a serious hill climb, or we're on snow.

See you there???

put the rear bumper (lifting the rear wheels) on a "stand", drive off it.

PULL THE REAR DRIVELINE AND SEE IF IT STILL MOVES

I jacked up the front and and turned each wheel with the hubs locked.  The driver side does not turn the CV, so I guess I need to work on the hub.

With the t-case in 2wd and the truck parked, lock in both front hubs. Reach under the front bumper and try to turn each front cv shaft. If one still turns, that hub needs work. Neither should turn.

Thanks for the tip.  I took apart the hub and cleaned it.  It is now working.  I was wondering how I could check it without jacking up the front end!

It only works with the tcase in 2wd, in 4wd the front driveshaft keeps the cv shafts from spinning, giving you false results...

Turning the driveshaft works, or you could just drive in a tight circle in a parking lot and see if you get resistance.  If you do the front wheels are driving.
