Post by: ColtonP on May 09, 2011, 04:20:36 PM

I know someone has a better answer, but I will start it off. You need lots of time, patience, and $$$. There might be lighter options.

Someone on here done one a few years back. You might check archives or PM one of the mods.

this is a pretty involved swap really. I don't know if there is a readily available gm-to-kick t/case or not but the OE (4x4) gm is driver side diff so the factory t/case is useless unless you do a sas too. (mo-money) also custom motor/trans mounts, major body work, alot of wiring (hopefully you would keep efi),plumbing,cooling,blah...blah...blah....
I would budget (if I were planning it)(which I never ever would) about 2500-5000. (crap adds up fast). after all that you could have a over weighted under performing kick.

(let the hate begin) ;D

my 2cents no-more no-less. ;)

I really never understood the 4.3L thing, if you are looking for more power, why not a
2.8 or a 3.1, those have a much smaller block and good power.

The 4.3 is a 350 with 2 cylinders missing, and is wide and heavy.

A 2.7 V6 from an XL7 or GV will fit better and retain the stock driveline much better

i have been telling myself lately that a 2400CC ford 4 banger might be a great weight to HP ratio conversion. i think it would be worth the machine work to mate it to a toyota tranny and tcase. There is tones of aftermarket stuff for the dirt circle and sand sports for the motor to easily get 250 Hp (with no fancy turbos and more with) and they are realitivly inexpensive to locate and work on.

yeh, yeh, let the bashing begin, but you all know im on to something  >:D  >:D  >:D

Anything but a heavy ass 4.3. There were some very good swap suggestions above, including locjaws Ford suggestion. IMO, I would go with any suzuki v6 over that lump o iron gm turd. Heavy, expensive and not a big power to weight gain.  Once again, JMO.
Locjaw, I get a catalog a couple times a year from a company that specializes in built Ford 4 bangers for racing. Just about everything you need to build a kick ass Ford engine. I'll have to look for the name in my stack of books out in the shop. I bought a lot of fittings and such for my turbo setup from them. Let me know if you decide to go that route, probably cheaper to make two of everything, and a lightweight NORMALLY ASPERATED 250HP sounds real good!  8)

I would do the 3.1 from a camaro, they are cheap. You would then need a 700r4 from an S-10 and a 208 transfer case from
An 80's blazer or suburban, it is passenger drop. It would be more money but a Dana 300 would be better.
If you went obd 2 then there would be more wiring hassle but it would perform better. You could have the computer programmed for
A manual trans. And the vats taken out.
