Title: ECM/Sensors on Blended Swap
Post by: mbruce on June 01, 2011, 05:22:47 AM
I have a 90' Samurai with a 92' 1.6L/8v head and block. So the rest is 1.3L Suzuki including the Fuel Injection. (this is based on what i'm told)

Regarding Sensors and ECM .... I'm assuming regardless of the tracker head and block I need Suzuki sensors and suzuki ECM...The other day I replaced a coolant sensor with a tracker coolant sensor --  maybe I should have replcaed it with a suzuki coolant sensor -- I googled it and there are both and look the same

Should there have been a modification to the ECM after the swap?

I searched on the forum and many posts have a "send to Brent for a $250.00 ECM modification..."

You want to keep the sensors with the ECM, that way there are no changes
that the ECM tries to compensate for, so you want to put the Air, water, and
any other sensors like the MAP, with the ECM, fortunately the Tracker and Suzuki
are the same, but year to year and engine to engine could change, so sensors
should be researched if you want to use other than the OEM ones

Cool - thanks! Sometimes I just need a little info to get started! With the motor problems I'm having I was told that I better hope my samurai has a diagnostics plug-in or I'll be chasing ideas until I'm out of money..LOL. So I started wondering about ECM and if I have a "diagnostics plug-in"

Tonight I'm going to remove the instrument cluster and go from there --  When I crank the Samurai none of the lights on the cluster light up--

Any tips on after I get it off ? heh

When you crank the Samurai or after the engine fires up?

I'm told that when I crank the samurai or right after it fires up the instrument panel lights should appear for a split second....I may need to setup a slow caption video camera but nothing flickers or comes on for a split second. Heh

My brights are always white on the panel so I'm assuming either they are always lit on the panel or they dont light at all on the panel.

I don't remember the emergency break light lighting either.

The 4x4 light works

Both turn signals do light on the panel.

I do have a ohm meter.... I was reading from google a few sites that explain how to test sensors... haven't came across one that explains how to test the ECM

Ok so all the lights on the instrument cluster work...well except for brake but that's not important to me...

the check engine code was 44...adjust TPS....I took the tps off thinking the inside of it needs adjusting--later finding out that's not the case and I didn't put it back the way it was or should be...the guy that did the engine swap never adjusted the TPS

None the less code 44 is not flashing anymore and I now get a 1 pause 2 meaning everything is ok. When I hit the override switch the check engine light stays on... Of course my problem is still there but it sounds different sorta...so tomorrow I'll drop it off with someone who can properly adjust the TSP.

my plan is this...adjust TPS ,  Replace my aircleaner and hose with an original one that's not modified like the one I have, replace the air temp sensor, O2 sensor, have the injectors cleaned and get a tune up, and  if none of that works then replace my idle speed controller

Does that sound like a logical plan ?? Maybe im missing a sensor that could be more obvious?

No ECM mods/changes should be needed.  What you are doing is running a different head and block with the samurai intake and sensors.
The "send to Brent for a $250 ECM modification" is probably referencing modding the trackick wiring harness, if you were going to run the complete 1.6 engine (engine, head, intake, sensors, etc.).
The trackick coolant sensor should work fine.  When people do the complete 1.6 swap, they use the 1.6 sensor that is in the 1.6 engine and it works fine with the samurai temp. gauge.
There are lots of sensors that are interchangable between samurais and trackicks....just depends on the sensor and the years you are dealing with.

You should have an OBD1 interface with a 12-pin ALDL style connector, the protocol is the same as an 8V Track/Kick.
