Do you guys know if you can get a rear locker for an '03 Vitara (not GV)?
-
I think it depends on how confident you are with rebuilding your diffs. I've heard of people using lockers for Samurai's, but i'm pretty sure it requires some serious know-how.
Keep us posted on what you find out. I've always wanted one for my Vit, but i've pretty much all but given up. ???

I had an ARB installed in my '99 Tracker. A little pricey; but works great.

Yeah, my understanding is the same... that outside of an ARB (out of my budget), it involves rebuilding diffs, which is outside of my comfort level.
I'll keep looking though, and let you guys know if I see anything...

Regardless of what you use (even an ARB air locker) - installing a locker will mean tearing the diff apart, followed by reassembly and the adjustment of preload & backlash.
-
It's the same diff as in a Sidekick so I thought that anything made for the sidekick would fit?
-
I'm pretty sure both Detroit and Lock Right make lockers, but they say they are only for 1989-2001. I guess there is some difference after model year 2001.

i wonder what it could be.... ???

I believe that they went to the same diff design at the XL7 which is a bigger unit.
The 99-2001 GVs and Vs had the same rear diff as the later (12-bolt ring) Track/Kicks.
-
There was a change to the rear diff gear for the '91 model year, for AT only. No change for MT.
No change for '92 or '93 model year.
Rear diff gear for MT is identical '99 thru '03.
This is from the Suzuki Parts Catalog.

True or false: sidekick rear diffs work in any gv/tracker 1999-2005?
Correct me if im wrong someone, but if sidekick rear diffs work in vitaras 1999 to 2005 then even if there is no locker for the vitara diff there are detroit lockers for the sidekick diffs which can then be put in the gv. Most ppl want the 5.125 gears from the sidekick to run 31's anyways. Hope that makes sense.
Mine's an '01 and the rear diff is from a 1998 sidekick sport so i was gonna get the locker to fit the sidekick not the vitara anyways.

I'm thinking in some instances the manufacturers simply haven't updated their catalog applications (ie; if the application catalog states it fits a 2000 model year shouldn't it also fit a 2001, 2002, 2003 with the same tranny, engine, etc parts?). Might not ever know unless someone tries a few of them or someone who has states their experience and results. Particularly for the 2nd generation trucks. 2nd Gens have been around long enough where they may start receiving some more aftermarket attention, but there are still lots of the 1st gen and Sammy trucks out there to sell to. It won't be long before the aftermarket for the 2nd gens start picking up... probably as soon as the economy picks up.

If i remeber correctly the GV v6 have bigger diffs and dont have locker options.

The GV v6's do have bigger ring and pinions, but you can install a kick third into the GV housing. I put kick 5.125's in my GV which you could then install a locker. I am not because of the tiny axle shafts.
