All props to Monster, fantastic drive, but in all fairness the course is now mostly pavement so apples and oranges as far as the old  record goes. The real climb was dirt and gravel. JMO. Soon when it's ALL finished being paved we'll start seeing ex formula 1 cars running up the hill. It's a shame they had to pave it so more tourists could make it to the top. Gotta make things safe for the lowest common denominator of drivers.  :(

Actually, they had to pave it due to run-off from the road going into the creeks and such.  Not so much for tourists but for environmental reasons so they wouldn't be sued for being negligent.  Supposedly the erosion was getting pretty bad.

Ahh, that makes sense, especially since all the TOURIST car , truck, motor home, bus etc traffic was chewing up the road.  If left alone the " road " would eventually revert back to the rough two track it once was, ala Gold Camp Road or Old Stage. Then ONLY the hardy with bikes and 4wd could make it up. The way it should be. Once again, JMO. BTW, who " owns " the road anyway now?

I believe it is a State road since technically it's a Highway.
