Title: Intercooler Q? (Wildgoody)
Post by: jagular7 on May 24, 2004, 04:04:48 PM
Wildgoody, with an intercooler, is it necessary to have it pressurized or an a normal aspirated engine can pull enough through the intercooler to run efficiently?
Is there a prime boost pressure to run through an intercooler?

Well, lets see, yes you can run an intercooler
without a turbo, I have been doing it since the
turbo blew up in moab.

as far as pressures, the higher the pressure the
hotter the air becomes, so a high boost engine
would need a larger intercooler to remove the
additional heat generated by the higher pressure.
So no, I don't think there is a prime pressure
for an intercooler to run at.

I think for the money, and the involved nature
of plumbing an intercooler both to and from the
engine and air filter, a better option would be to
draw cold air from outside the engine compartment,
like with a snorkel or something.
