Title: sidekick sport 1.8L starting problem
Post by: Dennis .89- on July 05, 2011, 11:59:02 AM
i got a code from the obd2 and it said that something was wrong with the camshaft positioning sensor.
before i code this code i changed the starter. all i could do is still there and hear click click click and i didn't
under stand why it wouldn't turn over but some times after trying for 10-15 mins it would just jump and
bam start like it was brand new. any one have any idea's on what can be causing this? i checked all the
ignition wires and it looked all good.

There are several possibilities - including a defective starter motor.

Start by putting a volt meter between the starter solenoid wire (the thin one to the starter motor) and ground - when you turn the key you should see +12V or very close to it - if you do, the starter needs to be taken out & tested - it could have a bad solenoid, worn brushes, or a bad armature/field coil.

it was doing it with old starter and the new one i put in exactly same and the starter comes with the new solenoid on it.
and i had the starter checked and it was good. i really need to fix it i have to drive a mazda truck ;'( i want the zuki back haha

There are two ways to fix this - throw parts at it until you find the defective part - or - use test equipment and diagnose it.

You've already replaced the starter - which IS the MOST likely cause - but not the only possibility - did you notice that the first thing I said was that were several possibilities?

So - are you going to measure the voltage - or - do you want to continue throwing parts?

Sorry for the late reply working out town but i did check the voltages and i found i had a huge power drop though the key ignition so i rewired my own starter with two switches in series and works like a charm. Quite odd for the obdII code i got but im happy i got it fixed.

Two switches in series huh - I'm a great believer in fixing the problem rather than bypassing it - a bad igntion switch, a bad neutral (or clutch safety switch) - maybe even a "clicky starter relay" fix - but it's your car, it's working & you're happy.
