Title: yet another 1.6 8V swap question...'s
Post by: mrdezyne on July 25, 2011, 07:35:12 AM
So with a little luck and some sweat I will be pulling at 1.6 8v out of a donor truck this week for my Samurai swap.  I believe its a complete truck so I'll be snagging everything I can that can be used on the Sammi.

Question then:
1. Can I use the Tracker transmission and is it an improvement over the Sammi?  (5 speed manual) Answer: NOT EASY/NO
2. Power steering, grab everything I see for this system? Answer: Pump is usable for conversion
3. Anything else the Tracker can cough up to improve the Sammi?
4. I just did a complete ignition tune up on the stock 1.3 motor, can I use all of this on the 1.6? Answer: only from 89-91

Thanks.

You have lots of issues, the trans is bigger, and the T-case is attached
so unless you swap the whole driveline it's not going to fit right, the power
steering is not a direct swap, but the pump is a good upgrade, the box that
was suggested to use is hard to find, did one of these a while back on a friends
truck.

If you get all of the wiring and computer you can use the EFI, but you will have
to add an electric fuel pump, and the 1.3 plugs will work, but not much else that
I know of, you might check tho

Your best bet would be to get the engine, and use an adapter to the Samurai trans
and the EFI is your option, the 1.3 carb will work with the manifold, but you loose
some drivability to wheel in off angle situations, and you could always add the EFI
later if you buy all the stuff now with the engine.

ok, forget the trans.  didn't realize the transfer case was attached.
I was planning on using the EFI, I'll be grabbing the harness and ECU for the injection.
I thought I had read that the coil was still ok to use on the 8v motor, wasn't sure about wires.
PS sounds like a PITA but would be handy I'd think.

Thanks!

If the 8V is an 89 or 90, then the samurai coil will work.  Otherwise, the trackick engine uses a different type of coil and the samurai one won't work.

my luck its a 93'
Nutcrackers!  Well I guess I have a brand new  ACCEL 8140HV Superstock High Vibration Coil for sale then...

I prefer the "classic" can coils, I have just seen too many failed
new style coils, so I would say go ahead and try the coil you have,
I don't see why it would not work, it just makes sparks, right?

True dat.  I'll see what happens.
I've just read through the 16v install page at Aftermarket 4x4 ( http://members.cox.net/aftermarket4x4/comp_proj.html (http://members.cox.net/aftermarket4x4/comp_proj.html) ) and he mentions the speed sensor mod.  Will this also be required for my 8v swap?  Reason I ask is that, well #1 I need to know but #2 I design color LCD instrument displays and will be trying out a digital dash in my project.  It will incorporate GPS speed so I was hoping all of the dash cluster could be pulled to make room for the LCD screen.

Attached is the smaller 4.3" screen version, I'm hoping to cram a 7" screen in my guage pod with a few modifications...  Cool side note, this 4.3 display has been used in the new McLaren MP4-12C track version recently.  I was in designer heaven when I found out.. HA!

91 and up trackicks have the speed sensor (VSS), so yes, you will need it.

Good write up with pics for VSS here...

Appologies if posting links to another forum is frowned upon.  The info is for the greater good of the Zuk community I figure...

Yes, someone did a very nice write up there. ;)

:-[  Geez, I need to pay closer attention who I'm chatting with on the forums... Zuk owners seem to be everywhere!  Yes, great writeup and thanks!

I still want to try the LCD display for kicks and giggles, it has configurable screens so I can watch temps and pressures, video input for backup cam (like you can't see out of a Samurai), GPS mapping, radio controls, and stuff.  It can even be set up to monitor water temp and then turn on the electric fan at any preset temp.  We sell them to Off Highway industrial applications and marine apps.  they are completely water tight and good for 50G shocks... should do well in the Samurai project...
If I know what kind of signal the VSS is sending back to the ECM we can probably copy it based on GPS speed.  Anyone know if its just a 0-5v signal?

It'd be easy enough to just put the VSS on the speedo cable & mount it under the dash somewhere. I can't think of any reason it'd need to be turning a speedometer to work. That way you can satisfy the ECU & still use your LCD dash.  ;D

That is what I'm hoping for, thanks for bringing that up though, its good to hear it from a second source to verify ideas once in a while...

Found this on the Coil situation
"If A7 has a yellow wire you have a 91 plus side kick and must install a VSS in the cluster as well as a coil pack and ignitor. If it doesn't you have a 89/90 and can use a coil without using a vss but still must use the sidekick harness and ECU. "

;D  So finally this evening I'll be going to pull the 8v out of my donor 93' tracker.  I will start another build thread to post pics of the common question items.  I know its been done before but the more references people can pull info from the better.  I save pics from posts like a madman for reference when I'm doing a mod.

Back to that Tracker transmission.  What about a 2wd trans?  Still a mess of work with the tunnel and mounting?

And the VSS, I'll have to look at it closer to see what is actually happening at the speedo end of the cable, if I'm not using the speedo anyway, maybe I can take the VSS all the way back to the other end of the cable and bypass all that mess.  It would be much cleaner anyway.

Yes, the VSS wire is a yellow one in the A7 position.
89/90 trackicks didn't use a VSS and they used the round canister type coils.  So the coil type is another indication of the year (or year range), if you don't happen to know.

Still needs tunnel mods.  But you can use the stock crossmember for mounting.  When I used a 2wd trackick tranny,  I had to cut the little raised plate off the top of the crossmember and mount it down right on the crossmember, in order for the tranny to sit low enough to keep the intermediate shaft ujoint angles in check.

Its just a reed switch and magnet mounted on the back of the speedo head, no reason why you can't locate it elsewhere. If you're using a digital dash then you can get most of the information you need from the ECUs serial link.

Ok, back on this VSS thing...

I found a nice writeup on the install to the Sammi speedo, but just what exactly is it that I'm supposed to remove from the Tracker speedo?  I tore my donor apart last night but nothing jumped out that looked like the bracket in the writeup for the install...

Thanks
