???I guess this is Zuki related. This came as the shock of a lifetime. I just got the call from The Salvation Army transfering my wife and I to Kake, Alaska. It's on an island about 100 airmiles south of Juneau. We have to be there by June 27th. Since The Salvation Army in Kake doesn't have a suitable vehicle. They are allowing us to take the Sami as our vehicle. :o I am going to have to work day and night to get it ready, back the garage and the house. What a nightmare this is going to be.
Wish us luck and keep the prayers coming.

good luck, hope your sammy can make it! :)

transferedto ak huh?? I'm in the US Coast guard been stationed in Ketchikan AK for the past year not far ( AK relative) from Kake .. I used the alaska marine highway to get up ( ferry) from bellingham WA its like $600 to take a zuk with 2 people witha state room) not to bad and it has a bar onboard movie room and good times.. above all welcome to the last frontier !!
-
Wow, good luck with your adventure.
Hope everything turns out well for you and your wife.

My wife is actually from Seward. I spent many years in Ak and love it there. But, in Juneau and Seward. Being in a remote area isn't going to be a lot of fun. We have been in the lower 48 for 8 years and have amassed a lot of possessions. Now, we have to let it all go. The house we are going to doesn't even have a garage. :'(
As of now, My wife is NOT a Happy Camper.

I hate to hear that she is not happy, but that is one hell of a change. How long will you be there?

OMG, that's out there :o My topo software did not even show a road in and out of there :-/ Do you have to Ferry in and out of that town? What are you going to do in such a remote area?

this may be a really reallly really really dumb qeustion but.. will it be cold all of the time, so u wont able able to work on the zuk??
-
It's a ferry or float plane trip in and out 70 degrees is a warm day. Just found out they are sending us a van but it's on a ferry hung up on a rock somewhere. I am really hating this. We wanted to add a front and rear bumper and at least the front part of the roll cage along with the Sidekick power steering. We have all the steering parts from the Kick. Just need the bracket and the u-joint. With the cost to ship heavy products to a remote village. All of that is now out of the questin. Oh well - life goes on.

WELL HOPE ALL GOES WELL FOR YOU AND YOUR WIFE. HOPEFULLY YOU'LL GET THAT ZUKE THERE OK. GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS..........MATTY D. 8)

The Zuke will go by barge. I did findout there are some old logging roads to explore, Sitka Blacktail Deer and black bear on the island. Supposed to be excellent salmon & halibut fishing all through the area. Aaccross the strait is Admirality Island. Has 1.5 Brown Bear per square mile. I feel a hunting trip coming on.
You cann't believe how inexpensive the hunting fees are for residents in alaska.

I did some studies last night about Kake, AK and this is what I've found thus so far. Kake, Alaska, is a Tlingit Indian village in Southeastern Alaska on the northwest of Kupreanof Island.
Its name comes from the Kake Indian Tribe living thereKake is located about 38 air miles northwest of
Petersburg & about 95 air miles southwest of Juneau, the state capital, on Kupreanof Island at
133° 56' W Longitude - 56° 58' N Latitude. There are about 800 people who live in this Tlingit Indian village.
Kake's claim to fame is it's totem pole, reputedly the world's tallest one piece at 132 1/2 feet.
It was carved for the 1967 Alaska Purchase Centennial Celebration.
Kake can be reached by air and sea. There are scheduled float plane and air taxi flights from
Juneau, Sitka and Petersburg. The Alaska Marine Highway also travels through the village of Kake.
The Alaska Marine Highway is the State of Alaska Ferry system, which travels through out Southeast Alaska,
Prince Rupert and the State of Washington. Kake also has some of the best Salmon and a company there that manufactures one of my all time favorites like Smoked Lox excellent with cream cheese and bagels. Forbes Magazine lists Kake, Alaska as a must see place to visit. :)

One of the members of our group e-mailed me at home. He and his wife have offereed to send "Care" packages to us on occasion. That just shows what a great group this is. When you're in a remote place and a package arrives, It's just like Christmas.
Blessing to you all.
OOPS, my wife just reminded me we have a hardtop to pickup in Marysville, Wa. This is really gonna get interesting.
She reminded me we have a set of front and rear springs in good shape that needs a home. Make us an offer we can't refuse. Zip for figuring shipping is 97702. I usually go FEDX ground for the best rates.

unfortionatly they charge you air rates to alaska for fedex and ups to all the islands everthing goes to Ancorage first then to the town your in ( i'm in ketchikan and I know what you mean about care packages we are a big town we got a walmart now lol) although its not a ful size one kinda a mini walmart you'd have to see it ) as for the barge i was gonna suggest that too but I have a fear personally of leaving with out my truck i don't let anyone drive it lol( not even my own dad).. I belive the best CO i've heard of is Boyer(sp) alot of the guys on my ship get together haves stuff in the lower 48 shipped to the CO and then barge it up...
-
Looks like we're gonna tow it or one transfer co said they might be able to order a larger container and put it in with our personal goods. We're allowed up 8,000 of personal effects and other than my tools. I don't think we will come close to that mark.
Sorry about the UPS remark. When I was in college (Many Moons Ago) I worked the UPS dock in Yakima, Wa at night. Gotta say, you guys earn your money. My rear is still a size small from that experience.
