Title: radiator mod for larger 22r engine
Post by: dnbuggy on August 26, 2011, 04:56:53 PM
87 sami w/ 22r engine.  I am having trouble cooling with the larger engine with the factory radiator.  With the larger engine, there was no room for the clutch fan or an electric fan inside the engine compartment.  I Put an electric fan on the outside, but still not enough cooling for low speeds.  My plan is to put a radiator inside the space where the grill is.  I have about 14 7/8 H x 20" W (I could maybe push this to 24" W) to work with.  This will allow me enough space to go with a factory clutch fan or an electric fan inside the engine compartment.  Problem is this: I can't find a reasonably priced radiator to fit that space.  I know there must be a small 2 or 3 row radiator off a car made in the last 30 years that would work, I just can't seem to find it.  Any ideas?

How fast does it overheat?  You can get aluminum multi-core Samurai replacements, or if you spend a bit more there are a couple of places out there that can make you a custom one.

You might look at a Saab 900 radiator.  It is a Crossflow 14x20x1 5/8, top inlet drivers side.

that sounds perfect.  So it turns out that I don't have the factory sami radiator in there, but some toyota rad that is way to big.  I think if I go back to a sami rad, but one that is multi row or aluminum with an electric fan, it might fix the problem.  Thanks!

I have seen 2 row Sami radiators advertised.

Trail tough has some for the 2.0 and 2.4 conversions, and maybe like a 1964 mustang rad would fit.

have you tried Water Wetter?  Dropped temps on my BMW track car a consistant 15-20 degrees even in 107 degree Oklahoma summer heat.  I'm not usually one to use bottle solutions but its a common use item in the track community here...

Look into a Honda Civic half radiator.

water wetter does work, not as well with antifreeze as it does with straight water, but it could help.

I have seen lower temps when running Honda coolant vrs the Prestone stuff.

I run the 22RE in my samurai with the stock toy radiator and clutch fan,I notched the front clip out and run hood pins...works fine.
