Title: Ring and pinion interchange info needed.
Post by: lazzer408 on September 05, 2011, 09:05:13 AM
I'm puting AWD into my '96 X-90.  It's currently 2WD.  I've sourced a front diff housing and axles ('98 Tracker) but the ratio is a 5.12.  I need a 4.65 to match my X-90 rear.  There's a '94 Tracker automatic (4.65) at the yard but it's 2WD.

Will the ring and pinion from the '94 rear axle fit in the '98 Tracker front housing?

I searched and only found info on Sami front swaps.

The ring and pinion from the rear will not fit into the front housing, it is far larger in dia.

There was a thread in the classifieds a few weeks ago with complete thirds, it would be far easier to go that route.

Yea, probably easier to just swap in 5.12 gears into the X-90.  Especially if you plan on going for larger ties.

They call me Mr. Stickler....

I mention this just in case what you typed above was not merely a slip of verbage...

Adding a transfer case and front axle guts to your X-90  (a rare, fun member of the North American Suzuki family tree!) will not result in "AWD".

"All Wheel Drive" connotates the ability to drive such an equipped vehicle all the time with power going to all four wheels.

Unfortunately, the drivetrain in an X-90 and all Suzukis of it's era are equipped with a part-time four-wheel drive system.  It can only be used in 4WD mode on loose or slick surfaces like sand, snow, mud or wet pavement.

Bad Things will happen to the drivetrain if you drive your newly-"4x4ed" X-90 any appreciable distance on dry pavement.

BTW - my rectal area does have a very high Intelligence Quotient!

Alot of that was quoted from Suzuki's site. All I know is -somewhere- Canada? There's a 5-speed Grand Vitata with an AWD transfer case with a center diff and no low reduction. Finding it is becoming the hard part. It's '06-'08 or '07-'09. Far as I can tell there's only a 3 year run with that combo.

On those XL-7s... The years I think I'm after would be the GM 3.6L engine right? Did that engine have the same bolt pattern as the 2.5/2.7? And if the XL-7 came AWD, did it ever come manual? If not are you saying the GV 5-speed transmission will bolt to the XL-7 TC if I swap some shaft? Or what did you mean about shaft swaps?

Here's what I need...

A 5-speed manual trans that will bolt up to an AWD transfercase and bolt up to a H25A. Is the XL7 AWD? I'm using the 2.5L not the 2.7L so I have a little more cylinder wall.

Check out these links. The seller states these are both 4x4 trucks. (He means AWD cause they -should- have a center diff). The first link is the first pic and the second link is the second pic.

Now zoom in on the dash (first pic). No knob. (singlemode)

Now look at the second pic. See the knob? (4-mode)

Note they are both manual transmissions. This guy from Canada insists there's only one transfercase used in those years. These options were never available in the united states.

The trans isn't as hard to find as the transfer case. The 5-speed trans should be the same for either.  I can find '06-08 AWD transfer cases but I haven't been able to verify from the sellers if it's a singlemode or 4-mode. Both versions had a center diff. I need to find someone here who works on these things to verify what it is I'm looking for. Like a part number or something.
