I got a new (to me) transmission for my '86 Samurai and got the old one out tonight. The new one does not have the piece mounted to the top of it that the shifter goes into - just the square hole and 4 bolt holes. No problem, I'll use the one from my current transmission. My question is, is there a gasket that should go between these? Or do I need to make a gasket or use some type of sealant? Or do they just bolt together? I can't really tell from taking the part off if there was supposed to be a gasket there
Thanks

Browsed the site a bit and found out from the link below that what I am referring to is the shift tower, and it looks like I need some sort of liquid gasket material for it. Advance should be able to tell me what I need.

Just use RTV silicone. I prefer the gray kind from Permatex.

I'm new to the Samurai but have been repairing 4x4's and machinery for many years. I've lately been using "The Right Stuff" RTV gasket maker. It's ready for service in an hour or less. Best gasket maker I've found. Just don't over use it, a small bead is all you need. PK

A lot of people say that is good stuff. I don't use it, because I have a place that I can pick up the gray RTV for about $1/tube.

Thanks for the help everyone. I used the gray permatex stuff, but I think I paid $7 for the tube. Oh well. The transmission is in and works fine now. I think I have some sort of small oil leak around the back of it but that shouldn't be a big deal, either I'll fix it or just check the fluid often. Come to think of it, I don't think I tightened the drain plug since I wasn't the one who drained the fluid before it was sent to me, maybe thats all thats needed.
