hey there again guys!! so i got all my lighting fixed. and now the check engine light came on. ugh....no biggie tho i kinda like working on it. ha. so here is the deal. i checked the engine codes and it came back 51 or egr system. i was just wondering if there is maybe something i should check or tweek before i replace the valve? keep in mind i am not super mechanicly inclined with gas engines. but i can build a golf car from the ground up (electric). seems to transfer well though. thanks for all the info in advance. :)

Clean the EGR valve before purchasing a new one.
What engine do you have?

its the stock 92 kick engine. i think the 1.8 8v. what would you reccomend to clean the valve?

Brake cleaner or carb cleaner works pretty good for cleaning the EGR valve and EGR passages in the head and intake. You'll need to use a stiff wire, or a broken speedo cable to run through the passages to break up the build up.
You can use a small screwdriver, to scrape the sides of the holes in the EGR valve.
You can use a small drill bit to clean out the little tube on the top of the EGR valve. Just start with a small one and keep going bigger until you get the build up cleaned out with out actually drilling into the sides.

I found these links to be helpful for addressing my EGR woes:
