Hi guys I have a 87 samurai with 69,000 miles on it that i know of. as far as performance parts go it has a full calmini exhaust with header and a drop in k&n filter and 6.4:1 tcase gears other then that its stock. I have been driving it around for the better half of 8 months with zero problems but now it hardly pulls 50mph in 4th gear on flat ground. ive been through the hole thing and the only conclusion i have is the engine is just tired.
i would greatly appreciate any input you may have.

A leak down test or compression test should tell you if the engine is getting at the end of it's life. Did the issue just start one day or has it been a slow progression?
-
it started about a month ago and slowly got worse i though it just needed a tune up. so i put new a cap and roatter, spark plug wires and spark plugs and it ran fine for a while and then it was back the same.
-
Does it have a cat? If it does check that it is not plugged, after the compression test that is.
Whats a "roatter" ???
-
alright i finally did a compression test on my samurai and not one of the cylinders went over 90 pounds and the cam is starting to flatten out a little bit. Im kinda surprised that it was still running with such low compression.
Who makes the best master rebuild kit and would i benefit from a torquer cam at all?

If he is running a full aftermarket exhaust than the Catylitic convertor should be fine, you usually only have to worry about that if you have 100k miles+ on engine.

when and if you rebuild the motor be sure to get rid of the crappy carb for a myside harley carb kit. 8)
-
The torquer cam usually moves the powerband down in the rpm range, thusly top end power will more than likely drop and the low/mid range gets a torque/power boost.

I heard about the Harley carb from someone before, what brand is it. I used to have a Suzuki cruiser and i hung with alot of HD riders, a couple of them used to run CV (constant velocity) Carbs, is this what you are reffering to?
-
yup its a cv carb. zuksoffroad makes the kit to install it and myron is the best guy ever and answers whatever questions you have about it.
-
I found also Peroworks kit, that comes with a better intake manifold:

I wish i could put the my side carb kit on it but i live in California so it wont pass smog if i do.
Thanks for the help guys.

NP.
That sucks, iv'e lived in Florida my whole life and we have very little driving regulations, no inspections or anything like that, just register your vehicle and your good to go. I love it here, i would never move.
-
Ca sucks with all its regs and they are getting worse, thats why so many are moving out.
A cat can plug up in a few hundred miles, new or not. When you loose power fast it is a good place to look just like the fuel filter.
90 psi means very little if they are all within about 10% of each other.
-
i took the CAT off and shined a light through it and it was clear.
the only way i was able to get 90psi was by flooring it while i was cranking it over unless im doing the test wrong.
what should the psi be at per cylinder? does anyone know?
-

Umm, no. If the compression is only running around 90 on all cylinders that means the engine will be waaaaay down on power and would be lucky to even run, let alone move the vehicle at any speed at all.
Factory spec is 199 psi for compression. With 170 psi being the service limit. There should be no more than 14.2 psi between the high and low cylinder.

You are supposed to push the gas pedal all the way to the floor, when you are checking compression.
See my previous post, for compression psi.

So when you replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires it started running fine again? If so, then it appears like there is something up with the ignition system. But then again, your compression tests would indicate differently. Faulty ignition components would not make the compression run low.

i was wondering if the ECM might be going bad but i dont know how to check it other then buy a new one and compare.
I thought 90psi was way to low for a engine to run also but it starts right up.
I already have the engine out and on the stand.
Skyhiranger you answered my questions straight to the point and are very helpful Thanks
-
I doubt the ECM is bad. The carbed ECMs rarely go bad. And if they do, they generally just affect how it runs, it would have no affect on compression.
Maybe your compression gauge is off, or you aren't getting a good seal.

ECM's aren't cheap.
Have you had anymore time to diagnose anything?

You can buy used carb ECMs for like $10 or $20. EFI ECMs are the ones that are expensive.
-
Gotcha, i was looking at Hawk's website and they are around $320, that's why i was saying that, they must be the EFI setup.

They might be, they might not be. Hawk's usually isn't the cheapest place to buy parts from.
