Title: RRO Jp-Eater Wrangler Spring Kit Too Soft?
Post by: susie on November 06, 2011, 05:10:56 PM
Finally received (3 months delivery time) and installed the kit. The back end of the Samurai bottoms out now. The kit came with new shocks. Should I get better shocks or should I maybe add a leaf to the rear springs? Hopefully I am not the only one experiencing this problem and I can get some suggestions. Thanks.

your shocks probably do not hold your rig up they just keep it from bouncing, how many leaves do you have in each spring, some run a five pack in the front end and a four pack in the rear end, i run six and six, they hold the rig up. 8)

They are new OME Wrangler springs under the axle. It gives me about 5" of lift from stock. There are 4 leafs front and rear. I also have a 1.6, 16v, if that means anything. Thanks.

could you post a pic of the rear shocks mounted? That would save a hundred questions or so!

I have always had slow shipping time with them and not the greatest fitment either.  I actually had to ream out bigger holes on my 1.6 adapter kits motor mounts to get them bolted on!

Shocks do not have any function with bottoming out, that is a function of the springs, the shocks merely dampen the springs actions.

Are you truely bottoming out? Do you feel the bottoming out on the street or is it only at slow speeds when off road crawling over stuff?

If the springs are too soft a coil over helper spring on the shock could provide the added stiffness as well as adding a leaf to the spring pack.

have you adjusted bumpstops after lift?

...if they are limiting travel due to having a too long compressed eye-to-eye, they will bottom before bumpstop come into play

on edit:
after 3 mos. they may have mis-shipped you; check compressed/exteded shock length.
Ideally, you will remove shocks and flex rig out to see max/min shock length required front/rear.
then you will know what's happening.

After racing a bit I can tell you that a proper shock can make all the difference.  There was a VW that could fly off the jumps, and it was all shocks.  You can go with either an additional lift spring or a stiffer shock, depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

Does it only bottom out on sharp bumps, but ride smooth the rest of the time?  How does it sit on the springs when at a stop, is there a slight positive arch to the springs, are they flat, or is it a neutral arch?
