Title: Which Clutch, and from where?
Post by: Twins on May 08, 2004, 02:08:08 AM
My Track has decided to spring leaks from the rear main-oil pan-crank seal-,  well just about everywhere but the headgasket and valve cover.  (Of course I just did the head 3 months ago  ::)).

Since the motor is going to be out I might as well replace the whipped stock clutch.  I'm wondering if anyone has had any good or bad luck with any particular brand?  I guess the question is what do you recommend?

I don't want to do it again so I will spend a little more to do it right,  but I don't want to pay for a name if that's all I'm getting for my money.

It's not the clutch that they said was a waste, but the pressure plate. In fact, most of the people in that thread like the DF centerforce clutch over stock.

Dude getahold of Roadless Gear. That stock clutch they offer rocks. You dont  need a centerforce ::)

I would have to disagree with the "stock clutch is as good as a centerforce" comment. I have had both and the dual-friction centerforce is ALOT better than a stock replacement. It grabs better and lasts longer than stock replacement. And in the "grab" department there is NO comparison. I have smoked a few stockers off roading, and I abused a dual-friction- centerforce for 6 years with no problems or slippage (with 33's). It was still in great shape when my throwout bearing blew apart and the parts got up in the plates. The guy that fixed it for me said that it would probably still work OK even after that, but I replaced it with another one just incase.

Lemme tell you a story...

Before I got my 4.24:1 transfer case gears, and I was running the stock 1.8:1 low range, I had a lot of issues on steeper obstacles, where I would slip the clutch a lot, and you could smell it burning up, etc.

Then, I put in a Centerforce I (NOT the DF), and put in my 4.24:1 transfer case gears at the same time.  With that gearing, I probably could have left the stock clutch in, but I felt a lot better, knowing I had all "new" parts in there.

Then, this weekend, I was out wheeling with the Rising Sun Toyota club, in my area.  On the "Whale-Tail", in Chinaman's Gulch, near Buena Vista, Colorado, I was suddenly having trouble - powering out, and not climbing the obstacle - I'm freaking out, and thinking WTF happned?  Then I realized - I had slipped the Xfer case into 4-Hi, for some fast driving between obstacles, and left it there!  I almost made it up in 4-HI!   :o

As soon as I dropped it back into 4-lo, I walked right up the obstacle.  My point is, with good (real low) gearing, it really doesn't matter what clutch you have installed.  20-20 hind sight - My next clutch (if I ever need one), will be a cheap ebay job, most likely.

time for my story .....

if i don't remove the crap plate from the base of the bell housing and shove a hosepipe in there to wash the clutch plates off ... i would use a clutch per outing
.... the mud we do over here in the uk is real bad on clutches and finds its way in everywhere

so for my 10 cents ...... get the cheapest that gives the results you need
its not always about the most expensive ... we are experimenting at the moment by putting the clutch from a 1.8 suzuki baleno ( dunno if you gottit over there ) in the vitara
its a bigger and stronger plate ...
i'll let ya know

Our DF clutch lasted TONS longer with our 31s then the old stocker did with 235s and still runs good even after having ran around with 33s before gears.

(we are now geared super low so it prolly doesn't matter as much)

P.S. Chevy Sprints / Geo Metros / Suzuki Swifts rock.
