Title: Valve Adjustment 1.6 16V
Post by: dectar99 on November 26, 2011, 01:08:55 PM
Looking to adjust the valves on my tracker 16V, & the manual calls for a special tool because it said that you can't get a wrench on some of the nuts.  I can't find the tool, so thinking of making one out of a deep socket & weld a handle on it then stick a screw driver down the center for the screw, but I don't know what size the nuts are to get the socket.        This is my first time trying to adjust the valves as they are making some noise, I have a new VC gasket, but don't want to remove the cover till I have everything to do the job... any help on this?
Also what adjustments do you use for the int & exh.

It's a 10mm nut, but Ive done mine several times without any " special " tool. Just a 10mm box wrench and screwdriver. There is a procedure for getting the valves to be adjusted to TDC, then it depends if the engine is cold or hot. I always do mine cold, like after sitting overnight. .005 to .007 cold I believe, without checking my FSM. Try searching for " valve adjustment" here and you should be able to find all the specs and procedures.

Thanks for the info, never would have thought a 10MM was thinking more like a 12 or 13MM...will give it a try with just a box wrench, like you I always have adjusted valves when cold,

To tight is worse than loose. It's better to have a little
noise in these than quiet "too tight"

Agree with Sundance, loose is better than tight, but with that being said I try and get mine as close to the minimum as possible. Splitting the difference is always good too, like .006.
