Title: 3 speed tanny issues?
Post by: phantomplanet89 on December 04, 2011, 10:55:21 AM
3 speed auto in my 92 tracker. Shifts good once it gets going. But from Dead stop take off... it like slips in and out of first a few times, but once i am already going its good. and the longer i drive it at a time the better it seems to do from a take off... Any ideas whats wrong?

When was the last time you had the transmission fluid flushed?  I have had a couple of automatics with shifting issues taken care of by that.

I would just take it to a shop and have them flush the fluid out, that might be enough to fix it.

Save yourself some money and do it yourself http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/maintenance/1272521 (http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/maintenance/1272521) Then buy a can of Seafoam  trans cleaner and I'll bet it's way better

I'm having the same problem with mine.  I had the ATF replaced a few times now but the gears still don't engage right away from cold starts.  It's like the car has to warm up first before the Reverse or Drive engages.  It takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Would there be a need for an overhaul?

Yeah, sounds like rebuild time. There is a company that makes a upgrade rebuild kit for the th180, http://www.altousa.com/am/high_performance (http://www.altousa.com/am/high_performance)
