Title: Looking for front and rear 4.30 R&P (tracker/sidekick)
Post by: johnnyairtime on December 09, 2011, 09:02:47 AM
Hello all,

I've got to gear my Sammi a bit higher, and need the 4.16 gears (as I have a tracker axle setup on the rear)

I'm currently running 4:56 or 4:62, and will be removing them if I ever locate a (tracker/sidekick) 4.16 gear set. If it helps to know what they come out of... I believe it's an early 90s 4 door Calif. edition Sidekick.

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE!! I NEED them!!!

I haven't heard of that one.

I have a Pair of 4.30's F/R from a 16 valve, 3 speed auto. Still Complete Thirds, if you are interested.

Your not the only one....!   ???

I posted over at Pirate and was being a bit more specific (in post #4);

I'll repost here;

If I can, I'll be more specific;

I just bought my Zuke, and the original owner set it up for crawling (mostly). I won't be rock crawling it, like he intended... and need to have a tad more top end. Problem is, I have a 3spd auto tranny (tracker), with a 1.6L 8V. It does good with the current 33"s, but I need about 8-10mph more out of 3rd, at 4000rpm. Right now, it's 51mph.

As it sits, the owner told me the transfer case is stock yet each end is re-geared to 4:56s. The rear axle (and housing) is from a tracker with the front being all Sammi. I also acquired stock front and rear complete assemblies (axles, housings, springs, etc) from a stock Sammi as well and believe it's all stock (gearing, etc).

My thought was to replace the rear axle, with the stock Sammi. However, I like the stronger tracker rear end. I was told, that it's tough to get the right gears for my needs... when using that tracker rear end. Thoughts??

... let me add to this, I've got an OTT Ind. Kicker3 doubler in this rig. It works for 4H and 4L ranges, as well as 2wd. Nearly a 50% reduction in low, or 1:1 in high. This was the thought to run a tad taller R&P, as it won't hurt my crawling speeds too much being I have a doubler.

My speeds are;
2H, doubler in high |removethispart|@ 4000rpm (3rd gear) = 51mph
2L, doubler in high |removethispart|@ 4000rpm (3rd gear) = 32mph
2H, doubler in low |removethispart|@ 4000rpm (3rd gear) = 29mph

... I of course know that I could put the axles back to stock and re-gear the transfer case (with subtle differences to high gears, and major changes to low), however... I'm trying to retain what I have and do what's cost effective. Seems, there's no "right" answer, or I haven't came to one yet.

Are you sure that you mean 4:16s? I don't recall ever hearing of those. The early 8V LWB model had 5:63s which are quite sought after.

I'm simply repeating what Petroworks told me.

If your rear transfer case is a Sammie case you would have around a 1.416 reduction in high range, that's where your rpm's are going.

By using the "4.16" number and since this is Samurai based, I'd say that you may be after the 4 to 1 Transfer Case gears.

For the Samurai, this will put a lower gearing into your High and Low side.

I wonder if I'm misunderstanding the question?  ???

"4.16" gears is what the Petroworks old GRSI t-case is..... sounds like maybe you were talking r&p and they were talking t-case gears.

might want to spend some time playing with a gearing calculator before you start changing stuff.
here is a good one : http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html (http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html)

I ended up running 4.30 R&P gears in my hybrid rear axle and TT 6.4 t-case gears, but mine is setup so I can crawl it and drive it to work.

No such thing as 4.16 axle gears for a samurai or tracker/sidekick.  As stated, they do make 4.16 samurai tcase gears.  So I'd say that you and petroworks weren't on the same page, when you were talking gearing.

Just wanted to update this thread, with what more I know... (huge learning experience for sure).

The R&P in my Sammi is 5.12, and the T-Case stock.

... looks like I'd need 4.30 R&P to get closer to what I need (add 10mph top speed).

They make a 4.30 for the my hybrid rear? (tracker housing)

That was the exact setup I was running. 5.12 R&P and stock t-case.
Yes, they have a 4.30 setup. I am also running a Hybrid rear and I am running 4.30 R&P and 6.4 t-case gears.

Here is a great gearing calculator that I spent alot of time comparing different gearing setups to get where I am now :

That's what I have. A Complete Rear Tracker 3rd with 4.30 and the Front 3rd is Complete too, but you will use the Ring and Pinion.

Let me know if you need them. ;)
