Title: Samurai 4th gear is GONE
Post by: rbparker on December 21, 2011, 08:44:55 PM
This could go in classified but felt better about the 4x4 section.
I blew up 4th gear, anyone have or know how to get a 4th gear?
After a 1200 mile trip for thanksgiving and a bad motor mount, my drive angle became askew. Between the fixed transfercase and non parallel transmission (drive shaft pointing the general direction of rear driver side tire), the rear output shaft bearing, the throwout bearing, and 4th gear all went ker-poop leaving me stranded 400 miles from home. It was actually a blown head gasket that stranded me, but I think my car was tired of working into a headwind with a messed up drive angle; the thermostat is in question but replaced.

I've been looking at the "local" junkyards car listings online and have contacted lowrange, but haven't had any fish bite. Figure the next best thing is zukiworld!
Thanks, Parker.

Personally, I think swapping the whole tranny would a lot easier and cheaper!
They're out the there fairly cheap. I have held onto a couple from donor vehicles
for just this same reason.
Post where you live and maybe fellow members that are close could help you out.

I hope to find a transmission in a junkyard that isn't the reason the car is their in the first place. Throwing in a whole new tranny in is my aim, but on a 100 dollar budget.
4th gear wouldn't be to bad to replace, its the only gear thats easily removed. My trans has about 5000 mile old bearings.  :P Then the question would be, after replacing 4th gear is that gonna be it? And Yah I don't want to find out something else is wrong after the install. So I do want a hole trans, I guess I didn't really expose that concern to the forum.

I live near Colorado Springs for anyone with a spare sitting around.

You may be able to just replace the fourth gear but if it blew then the bits may have caused damage elsewhere.
