Hey just wondering what your guys 8 v sidekicks run at. Mine dosent seem to go much above the cold mark on the dash. So the heater dosent seem to get that warm.

It should get hot enough to get decent heat, have you checked the T-stat for proper operation?

And by Proper, I'd suggest a OEM Suzuki T-stat.
I had some trouble with mine earlier this fall, OEM t-stat sealed the deal.
Geo and Suzuki, well Geo is a Suzuki, are particular about a couple things. Original Equipment NGK spark plugs and OEM T-stats. ;)
If I remember right, proper installation of the t-stat is important too. There is a "hood" around half of the top section, make sure it is Facing the Inlet Hose.
Er... Wait, Make Sure the Hood is Facing the Inlet Hose, like to CATCH the most flow. (hope that makes sense)

Thermostat needs to be in the 192-195 degree range.
I didn't specify the 1st time and got an 180. Ran better after installing the 195. Advance Auto should have a Stant 195 for about $6, and don't forget the new gasket.

Also, when replacing the T-stat, many people overlook the opportunity to service the cooling system.
When I did my T-stat, I also took the time to add the flush before hand and follow instructions.
Then drain the system, remove T-stat, replace empty housing, insert water hose into upper radiator hose, open heater core valve and flush out for several minutes.
By sticking the water hose in the upper radiator hose is is flushing out the entire system, backwards.
Then remove T-stat housing and install new T-stat and gasket.
I figured I'd loose 1/2 my coolant anyways so I did it all at once, afterall, antifreeze is $12/gal.
I was surprised at what all flushed out, how cool it ran and how well the heater worked afterwards.

I have flushed mine with laundry detergent a few times. It will break up all the muck in there.

I've never hear this before... is there a certain kind (brand) to use? What is in it that breaks down the glycol gunk?

I have used dawn dish washing detergent to clean up anti-freeze in the past, but never in a operating engine. I would be very concerned about any being left in the cooling/heating system after flushing.

Also the Tstat is on the outlet, not the inlet and needs to face the outlet to the rad so that flow is uniform, not to "catch" the coolant.

Thats kinda what I thought too.... I have always used Prestone Flush and it has done a nice job.
I had this funny image in my mind of opening the radiator cap and seeing the scrubbing bubbles floating by like a Mr Bubble bubble bath..... :laugh:

I have 4 collector tractors, 5 old tractors, my 1st motor cycle,etc..........
Well, my point is to be; These ancient owners manuals say to use "Washing Soda"
to clean the cooling system. I have used "Boraxo" The old Death Valley Days Show stuff
and flush well with water. It works great if you have lime and crud built-up.

Be carefull with the boraxo, it will leave it's own sediment within the cooling system, I had thought and hoped as a machinist that that backyard fix had completely disappeared,,,,,,,

and under compatability it says it works with mine. 1989 1.6 8v

Be careful with washing soda and aluminum. The caustic nature of washing soda (aka it's also known as caustic soda) will promote aluminum oxide (white powdery substance).
It is a great cleaner tho for iron (blocks and heads) and will cleanup old copper core radiators great!
