Title: What front springs after hagen widen mod..
Post by: smife on January 07, 2012, 03:01:41 PM
I did the Hagen widen mod when I installed by 3" calmini suspension kit.

The front sits a little low now. I have a ZOR front bumper and Smittybilt 8k with rope.

The center of my wheel well measures 38 1/2" with suspension and 3" body lift and 31's

My cv angles are at 16 degrees

Should I put a spacer in there to raise me back up? If so how much 1 1/2, 1, 3/4

Or should I just get new coils? If so what length and rate?

Depends on how much it dropped. Typically you'll lose about an inch of lift doing that mod. I'd go with a .5" spacer to begin with.

Thanks Bent, I'm not sure how much it dropped, I did everything at once.

Does anyone have 31's with the Calmini 3" sus. and bodylift.....  What is your front wheel well height?

What is the cv axle's safe operating range? I'm now at 16 degrees

I had the same set up on my white kick. We added spacers to make up for the difference, I believe they were 3/4". Not sure on the CV angles, I was running Maxima CV's at the time.

I'm pretty certain it is common to see the front start to sag, especially with use. I never had the chance to notice it, because my 3" was already trail-proven by the fore-mentioned kick.

When I looked into coils, the usual fix was to add a coil spacer. Another option would be to get different "coil-over" coils. See link below.

As far as the CV angles, thats a good tech question that I'm not 100% on.  I have read before, link below, that the inner and outer have different "max" angle. I bet your looking anywhere from 20-25 as a max angle. So I guess it might be better to find out what your Angle is at full droop and full compression.

Or you could just drive it til it breaks.....they are so easy to replace now since you did the widening.

I've been using the FOA 550 coils for a while now and they are the best I've tried so far. Period.  No sagging, fading and good articulation with the ability to absorb pretty big hits. With MudChilds adapters and similar widening mods they were an easy install. I recommend trimming the longer 16" to fit since you'll have to cut at least 1/2 a coil off anyway to gain the pigtail you'll need for the control arm. Why use a spacer when a longer coil will ride better?, imo of course. Mine are longer than usual due to changing the angle of the lower mount so I can't suggest a finished length,  you may need to adjust them more than once to get them perfect.
